For the first time in her entire existence, she had tasted true, unadulterated freedom, drinking in the intoxicating thrill of living entirely by her own rules.
And she had clearly partied entirely too hard.
"We're going to the ER," Cassidy commanded, taking charge of the disaster zone.
Since she was the only sober body in the room.
Cassidy took the wheel of her SUV, Felix called shotgun, and Nora wrestled a groaning Jasmine into the backseat, buckling her in tight.
After a chaotic, grueling hour of triage and paperwork.
Jasmine finally ended up slumped in an oversized vinyl recliner, an IV bag dripping fluids steadily into her vein.
She stared at the needle taped to her bruised hand with a self-deprecating laugh. "Am I seriously this pathetic?"
"It's a rite of passage," Cassidy drawled, completely unfazed. "You puke your brains out once, you find out exactly where your biological limits are, and you never make that amateur mistake again."
Nora shot Cassidy a withering glare before turning a gentle smile on Jasmine. "Next time you plan to take shots, just make sure you eat a heavy carb first."
Nobody was annoyed; the vibes remained impeccably supportive.
Felix, however, was already a menace, aggressively demanding Jasmine strike a photogenic pose so he could snap a picture of her IV line for content.
"This is pure gold! You collapse in the dead of night, and I swoop in like a hero to rush you to the trauma ward. The engagement metrics on this are going to be astronomical."
"Sure," Jasmine croaked out a raspy laugh. "And your caption can be you bitching about how high-maintenance women are for needing an escort for a minor stomach bug."
"...Can I not be a decent guy for once in our cinematic universe?"
"Have you learned nothing about manipulating the algorithm?"
"Forget it. I'm retiring from the outrage bait business."
Shortly past nine o'clock, Maloney strode into the brightly lit ER lobby to retrieve Nora.
Nora immediately buried her face into the lapel of his tailored coat, murmuring, "I ran into Sebastian Sinclair in the hallway tonight."
Maloney's jaw ticked, but he simply smoothed a hand down her hair. "We'll dissect it when we get home."
Not ten minutes after Nora vanished, Cassidy's personal chauffeur texted that he was idling at the curb.
"My secondary driver is outside waiting for you two," Cassidy instructed, throwing her trench coat over her shoulders. "Felix, you do not let her out of your sight until she is safely locked inside her apartment. Understood?"
Felix thumped his chest with solemn bravado. "I guard her with my life, Cass."
Once Cassidy swept out the sliding glass doors, a heavy, serene quiet settled over the fluorescent-lit infusion ward.
In the old days, sudden silence used to trigger brutal panic attacks for Jasmine.
