"Millions of dollars."
"A multi-million dollar house, and he just transferred the title like that?"
"It's probably because whenever he negotiated deals in the past, his only job was to sign his name. He assumed that once the signature was down, everything was golden and he just had to sit back and collect the cash. He doesn't understand the vetting, the confirmations, the collections—all the gritty details that his staff used to do for him. He trusted the broker too much, treating them like one of his old subordinates. That's why he ended up like this."
Jasmine patiently broke down the latest gossip on Yates for Nora.
Her tone was calm and mild, completely devoid of any vindictive excitement over Yates's misery.
It was as if she were merely an outside observer.
Cassidy couldn't help but marvel internally.
In just a few short months, Jasmine seemed entirely transformed.
Money really did nourish a person.
Especially when it was money earned by her own two hands.
It nurtured confidence, grace, and an aura of liberation.
Her entire presence had shifted.
Now, among the three of them, Nora was the one who seemed the most naive.
Even though she was the first to get married, she still carried the innocence of a child.
As for Cassidy herself.
Having achieved her current life goals, she just wanted to rest and focus on delivering her baby safely.
As for the future...
Truthfully, she felt entirely lost about what came next.
From marriage to pregnancy, it had all been about proving a point. Now that she had proven it, did she really need to keep fighting for more?
There was no answer to that question.
And there was no turning back.
As her thoughts drifted...
"Cass!" Nora's voice snapped her back to reality.
Cassidy looked over. "What's up?"
Nora looked concerned. "Are you not feeling well?"
Cassidy shook her head. "No, just lost in thought."
"About what?" Nora pressed. "You look a bit down."
Cassidy forced a smile. "Probably just exhausted from work."
She clearly didn't want to talk about it.
Nora switched gears. "Jasmine and I were thinking about getting some local BBQ tonight. You in?"
"Sure."
"It's a celebration! You've got to look happier."
"I will."
As evening fell.
The three friends headed to a popular BBQ joint on the corner.
Felix showed up as well.
It had been a while since they last saw him, and his hair was freshly dyed a slate grey.
Cassidy: [I think those two are secretly dating.]
They were completely talking past each other.
The word "dating" instantly short-circuited Nora's brain.
[Aren't they pretending to be a couple for the internet?]
[No, that's not what I mean. Most on-screen couples aren't that intimately comfortable with each other in private. If you ignore their videos and just look at how they interact in person, you seriously didn't catch the vibe?]
[Not at all.] Nora's reply was brutally honest.
Cassidy: [...]
Exasperated, she texted back: [Go focus on being romantic with your own husband.]
Nora: [Are you okay?]
Cassidy: [Stop worrying about me.]
She had a heavy heart but refused to spill it.
In the past, she would be the first to violently vent about anything bothering her.
Nora could tell Jasmine had evolved.
But similarly, Cassidy had changed too.
And it didn't feel like a change for the better.
Influenced by Cassidy's heavy mood, Nora found herself feeling inexplicably down.
That night before bed, she proactively wrapped her arms around Maloney, seeking comfort.
She just felt totally drained.
