The Jamesons and the Sinclairs had deep ties, and Maloney and Sebastian were close friends. Back in middle school, Sebastian couldn't stand the relentless teasing about his childhood engagement to Nora, so he moved out of the Gated Community. He had originally planned to take Seraphina with him, but she refused to leave the friends she'd grown up with.

Consequently, Sebastian had asked Maloney to keep an eye on her.

He agreed.

But Seraphina hardly needed any looking after. She was fiercely outgoing, highly manipulative, and constantly surrounded by a massive entourage of boys. She ruled the Gated Community like royalty.

The person who actually needed protection was Nora, the girl burdened with the childhood engagement.

As far as Maloney could remember, Seraphina and Nora had never actually clashed.

In fact, Seraphina had once violently defended Nora.

At the time, Nora's cousin, Bella, had plastered sticky notes all over Nora's body with the word "Whore" scrawled across them. Bella had then shoved her out into the middle of the crowded street, screaming for the neighborhood to come look at the pathetic spectacle.

Bella had viciously announced that Nora, despite being a child, had seduced the elderly Mr. Sinclair to secure the engagement with Sebastian.

Everyone in the neighborhood actually knew the truth, and this was far from the first time Bella had humiliated Nora.

Since the Sinclair name was being dragged through the mud, someone had sprinted to get Seraphina. When she arrived and saw the scene, she walked right up and slapped Bella across the face. She ripped the notes off Nora, shoved them down Bella's throat, and vowed that if she ever insulted the Sinclair name again, she would strip her naked and throw her out of the Gated Community.

Bella was a coward who only preyed on the weak; she was utterly terrified of Seraphina.

She never dared to pull a stunt like that on Nora again.

Even though Seraphina's intervention was purely to protect her family's pride, Nora was fiercely loyal. She committed every single act of kindness to memory.

Therefore, the animosity didn't stem from any bad blood between the two women.

Maloney realized the problem was him.

Seraphina had hunted him relentlessly.
