Maloney knew something was terribly wrong with Nora's behavior.
Putting aside the fact that she had secretly bought the pill.
Since there was a microscopic chance of conceiving a 'genius baby', she ultimately took the medication anyway.
She took it that very night.
Nipping any potential genius in the bud before the cells even met.
The rest of the pills went straight into the trash, box and all.
Maloney made her promise never to cross the line with this kind of thing again.
He was confident that as long as Nora didn't act recklessly, he could stick to his principles.
Nora, however, was far more impulsive than he was.
By the time she took the pill, it was already two in the morning.
Exhausted, she showered and immediately crashed hard.
There had been no time to address the issue of her burying her emotions.
As a result, when Maloney got up the next morning, Nora insisted on helping him get dressed.
Today was supposed to be their day off at home.
He was only going to the bathroom.
Why did he need to get dressed?
Even though she was dead on her feet, her eyes half-closed, she stubbornly dragged herself up and started measuring a dress shirt against his chest.
"Can you even reach?" Maloney teased.
He watched her cheeks puff out in annoyance.
But she swallowed her retort, pulled him toward the edge of the bed, and stood on the mattress to button his shirt.
Taking advantage of the moment, Maloney wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her down onto the bed.
As his kisses trailed down her neck, Nora closed her eyes, entirely yielding to the moment. "I wonder if the pill is still working," she mumbled.
Maloney was speechless.
Did she have any idea what 'effective within seventy-two hours' meant?
It meant taking it within seventy-two hours after the fact.
It didn't give her a free pass for whatever happened after she took it!
She was brilliant, but in moments like this, she couldn't even grasp a basic warning label.
He pinned her down and kissed her until she finally dozed off again.
They didn't get up for a meal until noon.
The housekeeper, who had just returned from her holiday break, had prepared a massive feast.
Maloney watched Nora sit there and peel shrimp.
She never peeled shrimp with her hands.
She always used her teeth.
He watched as she meticulously placed every peeled shrimp into his bowl.
Even the most oblivious man would have caught on by now.
So, after reading all those files, Nora's takeaway was that she needed to repay him?
