Maloney and Nora had just flown back to the capital last night.

After landing, they didn't even go home. They headed straight to the hospital to ensure Cassidy and her baby were perfectly fine before they finally let out a sigh of relief.

First thing the next morning, Maloney dropped Nora off at the hospital to visit Cassidy again.

Therefore, when Nora mentioned she had a gift for Maloney, it had to be something prepared before their vacation.

She simply hadn't had the time since they got back.

That meant the most likely reason for the gift was guilt.

Guilt over cutting short the five-day island getaway Maloney had planned, returning after barely three days.

Even on the flight back yesterday, guilt had been written all over her face.

Nora had even tried to butter him up with extra kisses and cuddles.

Maloney rested his hand against the small of her back. "What kind of gift?"

Nora had left her coat in the entryway, leaving only a loose, soft sweater between his palm and her skin.

"It's up on the third floor," she murmured.

The third floor?

His mind flashed back to the pile of fabric he'd seen in her little workspace the other day.

A tangle of lace and fluffy trim.

At first, he hadn't recognized what it was for.

He'd thought it was just some decoration.

Later, piecing together her flustered reaction, it finally dawned on him.

Stopping at the door she indicated, he finally remembered. The third floor also housed her storage room.

A place for her old belongings.

Nora had moved out of her family home in high school, after Diana and her brother generously rented her an apartment near campus.

She hadn't brought much luggage. Aside from the essentials, it was mostly a childhood's worth of certificates, trophies, her diaries, letters from people who had helped her, old yearbooks, and notes from her teachers.

When she went off to college, some of those things stayed in that apartment.

Later, when she accepted Maloney's proposal, her long-presumed-dead biological father miraculously reappeared, gifting her a downtown condo as a dowry. Diana had chipped in with a commercial space, which Nora eventually turned into her studio.

Only then had she completely moved out of her old rental.

Originally, she planned to move her boxes into the condo her father gave her.

But the place was already fully furnished. Maloney had convinced her that if she ever wanted to remodel, her keepsakes might get damaged, so he offered to store them at his house for the time being.
