"Why are you at the police station?" Nora asked curiously. "You arrived right behind me."
"You didn't answer my texts, so I went looking for you. I saw your car pulling out of the estate just as I arrived," Maloney replied smoothly. "I just followed you here."
Nora was never in a good mood whenever she had to visit her childhood home.
When Maloney had received her text about attending the autumn family dinner, he had immediately replied, asking what time it would end so he could pick her up.
Nora hadn't answered.
Given how intense their relationship had been lately, Maloney had wanted nothing more than to fly over and comfort her.
But Nora hadn't replied to any of his messages.
She hadn't even answered his calls.
Unable to shake his anxiety, Maloney had dropped everything at the office and rushed straight to Mistwood Manor.
"Oh, right," Nora nodded in realization. "My phone broke. I need to go buy a new one later."
The earnest way she explained herself was simply too adorable.
Maloney couldn't resist leaning down to kiss her.
Startled, Nora immediately leaned back. "What are you doing?"
Maloney cupped the back of her head, pulling her firmly back against his chest. "What are you hiding from?"
"There are people around," she mumbled defensively.
Diana and David stood frozen like statues at the precinct entrance, staring at Nora and Maloney.
They weren't even paying attention to Vivian and Bella being hauled inside.
Maloney cast a fleeting, indifferent glance at the siblings before looking back down at Nora. "Should I take you home first?"
"I can't leave yet," Nora said. "I made the call. I have to give a statement."
"Alright. I'll wait with you."
Nora was led into a private interrogation room.
Sitting on a bench in the waiting area, Maloney watched as an utterly devastated Vivian desperately clawed at Diana and David, begging them to save Bella.
No one in the Dodge family truly loved Nora.
