Valery suffered from a congenital heart condition.
Her heart and lung functions were inherently flawed. Being in a crowded environment, combined with emotional distress, had spiked her heart rate and blood pressure, straining her heart and triggering severe shortness of breath.
Overall, the situation wasn't dire.
Though her condition hadn't sharply deteriorated, the lingering instability prompted the doctor to recommend that Valery remain safely at the Evergreen Wellness Center moving forward, strictly forbidding further outings.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were utterly heartbroken.
Yates stood nearby, sighing heavily.
Jasmine remained silent for a moment before calling out softly, "Yates."
He turned around. "What is it?"
Meeting his gaze with calm eyes, Jasmine said, "We shouldn't get married."
Yates looked stunned. "What did you just say?"
"The wedding is off." Jasmine's face was devoid of emotion as she carefully explained. "If we get married, Valery will definitely want to attend. But she isn't allowed to leave the wellness center anymore. What if we force the issue and something like today happens again?"
"And we certainly can't hold the ceremony behind her back. She would be devastated if she found out, and being upset would only trigger another health crisis."
"So, we just shouldn't get married."
Her reasoning was airtight.
Valery was always the ultimate trump card.
Yates stared wide-eyed, his mouth opening and closing as if trying to speak, but the words caught in his throat.
Jasmine spoke flatly, "If you don't have any objections, then it's settled."
Settled?
How could anything be settled just like that!
They had over a decade of history and had finally reached the altar. No matter the excuse, how could she just call it off out of nowhere?
Yet he couldn't find a single counterargument.
In his panic, Yates raised his voice and blurted out, "Stop being ridiculous! What do you mean the wedding is off? Are you just mad because Valery ruined your engagement party?"
Jasmine frowned slightly. "I'm not—"
Before she could finish, Mrs. Smith cut her off with an angry shout. "Valery is still lying in a hospital bed! Why are you throwing a tantrum right now? Can't you be considerate for once?!"
As she spoke, she lunged forward and slapped Jasmine across the face without another word.
Instantly, Jasmine's head rang. It felt as though her ears were stuffed with cotton, drowning out all the noise from the outside world.
Startled, Yates quickly stepped in to hold Mrs. Smith back.
His mouth moved as he seemingly tried to defuse the situation.
The anger on Mrs. Smith's face shifted to surprise, then softened into a flicker of guilt. She reached out, trying to grab Jasmine's hand.
Nora suddenly sprinted over, inserting herself between Mrs. Smith and Jasmine.
Mrs. Smith's hand hovered in mid-air as she frantically tried to explain herself.
Right then, Cassidy rushed forward and kicked Yates so hard he stumbled backward.
Caught off guard, Yates fell hard onto the floor. He scrambled back to his feet, his mouth moving nonstop.
