The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 93

There were four elevators in the apartment building.

Jasmine divided the chocolate candies into four portions, tore the A4 paper into four equal pieces, wrote the apology notes, and taped them inside each of the four elevators.

Felix obediently carried the candy and helped her tape them up.

When they were finished, Jasmine turned around and noticed Felix staring at her.

"What is it?" she asked.

Felix suddenly said, "You never answered my question from this afternoon."

Jasmine blanked for a second before realizing he was referring to the conversation they'd had on the balcony about dyeing her hair.

The topic had come out of nowhere.

For a moment, she didn't know how to respond.

Felix asked bluntly, "Is it because your sister is sick and can't dye her hair, so she won't let you dye yours either?"

Jasmine quickly waved her hands. "Of course not."

Felix pushed further, "Then it's because you think your sister would be sad if you dyed yours, so you're sacrificing it for her sake."

Jasmine tried to explain. "My parents always said that if there's something my sister can't do, no one in the family is allowed to do it. Otherwise, it would trigger her condition."

"Is that a family rule?" Felix looked completely flabbergasted. "A couple of years ago, my brother broke his leg. He was in a cast and a wheelchair. My whole family played basketball right in front of him and took selfies with his cast."

"If anyone in my family doesn't have a selfie with my brother's broken leg, I'd look down on them."

Jasmine was speechless.

"No, it's not the same," Jasmine said helplessly. "My sister has a congenital heart defect. It's incurable. The doctors said her lifespan is limited and she can't handle any stress or emotional triggers."

"Doesn't that mean you should take her out to see the world even more?" Felix's expression grew even more incredulous. "Does your whole family just operate on your sister's timeline?"

Taken aback, Jasmine patiently explained, "No, what I mean is, if she gets triggered, it could literally shorten her life."

"So what does your sister do every day?"

"She lives at Evergreen Wellness Center. I visit her every day to talk and take her for walks."

Felix's jaw dropped, a faint "ah" escaping his throat. He looked like he wanted to say something, but the sheer shock had lodged the words in his throat.

"What?" Jasmine asked.

"Let me just share my personal take on this," Felix said, clearing his throat. "If I were sick and the doctor told me I only had a few years left, meaning every day was a countdown... I would write down every single thing I wanted to do and do it."

"Even if every activity cost me a few months of my life, I'd rather go crazy living out my limited time than spend it trapped in a wellness center figuring out how to survive a little longer."

"The point of my life wouldn't be to outlive anyone else. If I'm a patient, I'm already destined to lose to a healthy person. So I'd speed things up and try to experience every ounce of joy this world has to offer."

Seeing Jasmine staring at him with wide eyes, Felix quickly added, "I'm just speaking for myself here. I'm not your sister, I've never had a terminal illness, and I don't know the pain she's in. It's human nature to fear death. I just think being trapped in a clinic long-term has got to be a miserable way to live."

It was undoubtedly miserable.

Half of Jasmine's life had also been trapped in that very same wellness center.
