When Nora finally finished and looked up, she met Maloney's intense, burning gaze, and a thought suddenly popped into her head.
Was Maloney trying to claim credit just now?
No way.
A man as composed as him wouldn't do something so petty.
But... he had deliberately cut his sentence off halfway.
And lately, his behavior hadn't been nearly as composed as it used to be.
"Maloney," Nora whispered. "Thank you."
Maloney let out a faint, "Mm."
Okay, so he really didn't care.
Still, Nora put on a serious face and asked, "How do you want me to thank you?"
Maloney's eyes darkened slightly. "How do you want to thank me?"
Nora thought about it. "I could tailor a custom suit for you?"
Maloney was completely cornered.
If Nora offered to make him clothes, he couldn't refuse.
But he wanted more.
Once a favor was assigned a specific value, it was hard to renegotiate.
He shouldn't have thrown the question back at her.
A classic negotiation error.
The fleeting flash of regret in his eyes must have been entirely too obvious.
Nora realized that Maloney had a closet full of haute couture. He didn't need a suit from her.
He might not even like what she designed.
"Uh, well," Nora quickly interjected before he could speak. "Why don't you decide instead?"
Maloney replied, "The suit is fine."
"The suit will be a bonus. You can ask for something else."
"Then put it on my tab."
Nora kissed his cheek. "Deal."
Maloney pulled her into a tight embrace.
They leaned against each other, talking quietly for a while.
His current life was infinitely close to his ultimate ideal.
