Chapter 310
Gemma’s POV
The automatic doors of Dream International slide shut behind me. I take a deep breath of the outside air, my thoughts already shifting to the hospital and the visit I owe Mikhail.
But my plans freeze mid–step. Leaning against a sleek, black sedan parked directly in the drop–off zone is a figure I didn’t
expect to see.
Jeremy Hartley?
He straightens up as he sees me, his expression unreadable, “Miss. Marino.”
“Mr. Hartley, what a coincidence. Are you here to see Mr.
Voloshin?”
It’s the only logical reason for the CEO of Opal Group to be loitering outside my office building.
He shakes his head, his gaze steady and intent. “It’s not a coincidence. I’m here specifically to see you.”
A flicker of unease stirs in my chest. At this stage, with projects wrapped up for the year, I can’t think of a single thing we’d need to discuss alone. Even if it was about future collaboration, that’s a problem for next year. “I see,” I say, waiting.
He doesn’t drag it out. “I’m here to talk to you about Zing,”

The awkwardness condenses inture confusion. What could the Jeremy Hartley possibly wanwith my best friend?
“Shall we go somewhere to talk?
suggest, gesturing to a small,
secluded seating area just inside the lobby. He nods, and we settle into two stiff armchairs.
“So,” I begin, after he’s laid out the bare bones of his story, my voice laced with disbelief. “You mean you and Zina were dating before?”
He gives a single, sharp nod, his jaw tight.
Jeremy Hartley… the man is a force of nature in the boardroom, all coldness, ruthless calculation and imposing presence. And Zina… my vibrant, chaotic, fiercely loyal best friend.
The pieces don’t fit!
But now that he has confirm it, the reality of it sinks in. “What do you want me to help you with?”
I finally manage to ask.
“I want to meet her.”
“Huh?” The request is so simple, yet it feels impossibly complex.
“Ever since she unilaterally broke up with me, she’s been
avoiding me.”

Lucky Draw
For the first time, I hear a shred of frustration in through his usually controlled tone.
“The Opal Group’s conference was originally going to be held at sea, but she can’t swim, so I moved it to a garden. Yet, she still didn’t show up.”
He leans forward slightly, his elbows on his knees. “I called her, but she blocked me. So, I used a different number to call. As soon as she heard my voice, she hung up. I went to her bome to find her, but she wouldn’t see me. So, I had to trouble you, Miss. Marino.”
I stare at him, trying to reconcile this man, who changed a major corporate event because his girlfriend couldn’t swim, this man who is now resorting to tracking down her friends…. with the ruthless businessman I know.
It’s jarring! It takes me a solid few seconds to process the fact that Jeremy Hartley is apparently a romantic at heart. A desperate one, at that.
I find my voice, firm with loyalty. “Zina wants to break up with you, and I’m sure there’s a reason. As her friend, I can’t make decisions for her. If she doesn’t want to see you, I can do nothing for you.”
My words are a shield for her. I don’t know their story, but I know my role.
Jeremy takes a deep breath, as if steadying himself. “I understand, Miss. Marino. I understand your concerns.” 3/7

up, I deserve a proper reason. I think I deserve that much closure.”

The humility in his voice, the slight bow of his head as he stands, is so utterly out of character that it disarms me completely. I’m not used to this version of Peter.
“I understand. I’ll pass on the message, but I can’t guarantee that she’ll want to see you.”
“Of course. Thank you!”
The gratitude in his eyes is genuine. He gives me a slight, formal bow before turning to leave.
My planned hospital visit is instantly forgotten. I hail a cab and give the driver the address to the villa, my mind racing.
Zina opens the door in a set of rumpled unicorn pajamas, her hair a messy bun. “Hey! What’s the emergency?”
She asks, stepping aside to let me in.
I step in and stand the middle of her living room, arms crossed, fixing her with a look that has her smile fading. “Zina, you’d better come clean. What’s going on between you and Jeremy?”
She’s in the middle of a yawn. My words hit her like a bucket of
ice water.
She chokes, sputtering, her eyes flying wide open. “Did that jerk come to you? I knew it! He must be thinking of ways to mess 4/7

She’s furious, pacing the length of her rug, ranting about his audacity.
“Hurry up and explain what’s going on between you two,” I demand, losing patience.
“What else is there to explain?”
She exclaims, throwing her hands up. “I’m supposed to marry his dad. My own boyfriend’s father, and he did not react at all. No reaction! Shouldn’t I run? What, am I supposed to go into that gilded cage and serve both father and son?”
Her voice is shrill with indignation. I squint, trying to keep up while piecing this together. “How did he not react? What did he say?”
“He just said ‘I know‘! That’s it! Just ‘I know‘ and nothing else. That jerk was still playing it cool. I’m done with him!”
Hearing this, a knot tightens in my stomach. This isn’t a simple misunderstanding, it’s a tangled mess of family politics and bruised feelings.
My instinct to protect her wars with a sense of fairness. “Jeremy asked me to help arrange a meeting with you.”
Zina stops dead in her tracks. “He asked you to set up a meeting?”
The anger on her face is momentarily replaced by sheer, unadulterated shock. I can see the gears turning in her head.
