The Don Tore Up Our Divorce (Gemma and Cassian) novel Chapter 311

Chapter 311

Gemma’s POV

Zina is staring at a loose thread on the sofa, her earlier defiance gone, replaced by a pensive, almost lost expression.

I’ve realised nowwe didn’t ever really make it official, you know? It was all justimplied.

She lets out a short, bitter laugh. It felt more like we were just using each other to get what we needed. Me, for the thrill, for the distraction from my family’s mess. Himfor whatever a man like him needs. Not really being true partners.

She looks at me, her eyes searching for understanding. So at that moment, I got all worked up. I justproposed a breakup.

She makes it sound so simple, but the pain in her voice betrays her. After that….she continues, shrugging as if it meant nothing.

I packed my things from his villa and left without a word. It wasn’t like I had no other options, I can live without Peter.

I’ve known her since we were girls. I know every one of her tells, every mask she wears. This is the thinnest one yet. Zina, be honest with me. Do you really like him?

I see the struggle on her face. A lump seems to form in her

throat.

marry his father?

The words tumble out, laced with a hurt she can no longer hide. She does like him, but by the time she realized it, it was too late, the situation had become too tangled.

But she couldn’t swallow her pride to beg him for scraps of affection, so she ran. It would be the ultimate humiliation if, after all this, Peter was the one to finally reject her, perhaps even offering his cool congratulations on her impending marriage to

his dad.

I think there’s a big misunderstanding between you two.

The man who stood in my lobby today wasn’t someone who had discarded his toy, he was a man desperately seeking answers.

Oh, whatever. Have we run out of every other topic?

Zina snaps as she down beside me, grabbing a pillow and pressing it over her face, a muffled groan escaping from beneath the fabric. I feel a wave of helplessness and amusement. Some things never change.

She eventually retreats to the kitchen, claiming she needs to cook, but I know she just needs a wall between us and this

conversation.

The silence is shattered by the shrill ring of my phone. The caller ID makes my blood run cold: Sacred Hope Hospital.

My mind suddenly blanks. My sigile, a leftover from the conversation with Zina, freezes and dies on my lips.

Lucky Draw

Miss. Marino, are you listening? Your mother is in critical condition and needs a family member’s signature for the operation!

From the kitchen, there’s a loud datter, like the spatula hitting the floor. Zina rushes out, her eyes wide with alarm. What happened?

But I’m already picking up my purse, my legs feeling like wood. My mom is in danger!

The color drains from Zina’s face. She doesn’t hesitate before grabbing her keys and bag, following me out the door. I’m driving!

Throughout the ride, I’m no better than a statue staring outside without seeing anythingcountless terrible possibilities flash through my mind. What if?

Zina reaches over from the driver’s seat and squeezes my hand, her grip almost painfully tight. Don’t worry. Your mom will be fine. We’re on our way now. Gemma, you have to calm down!

Her words are meant to be soothing, but her own voice trembles, betraying her fear. I can see her legs shaking as she presses the accelerator.

We burst into the hospital, and when I reach the operating room, my heart plummets. Standing there, like a pair of Vultures, are Lydia and Kitty.

mine, and a flicker of guilt flashes across her face before she marches right up to me.

Gemma, you can’t blame us for thisshe declares, as if I’ve already accused her. I just came for a friendly visit. How could I have known she would suddenly get so sick?

Her tone is aggressively selfjustifying. I completely ignore her, my focus on a nurse hurrying past. Miss, how is my mother? What’s happening?

The nurse slows, Miss. Marino, your mother had a sudden relapse and fainted. I’m not sure about the specific situation inside, we must wait for the doctor to come out. This is the critical condition notice. You need to sign here.

She holds out a clipboard. A chill spreads through my entire body, from my scalp down to my fingertips.

Gemma, it’s a standard form.

Zina gently guides my shaking hand. Let’s sign it first. We can’t delay your mom’s surgery.

Her practicality is the anchor I need in this moment. I scribble my name messily, and as the nurse disappears back through the swinging doors, Zina pulls me towards the hard plastic chairs. Let’s sit. We just have to wait, okay?

Lydia and Kitty watch us from a few feet away, like animals ready to bolt. Well,Lydia says, clearing her throat. Since you’re here, I’ll leave your mother in your hands. I have things todo at home. Come on, Kitty.

She makes to leave, but my voice tops her cold.

What did you say to my mom?

Lucky Draw

My mother’s condition has been able for months. It wouldn’t just suddenly spiral like this unless someone deliberately provoked her.

What could I have said?Lydin retorts, shoving Kitty forward, pointing at the faint redness on her cheek.
