As this thought settled, Evan became more pleasing in his eyes, seeming superior to Stefan in every conceivable way.
Footsteps sounded on the staircase.
Moments later, Sara descended, dressed in a tailored wrap dress that accentuated her tall, graceful figure.
A decorative blue tie at the waist emphasized the narrow curve of her midsection, creating a striking contrast with the full, rounded curve of her hips. The effect was both elegant and eye-catching.
Evan's expression brightened at the sight of her. He quickly stepped forward, leaving Stefan behind. "Sara, it's almost lunchtime. I've reserved a private room at the Drizzlewood Retreat. I'd like to treat you and your parents."
Sara had already exchanged pleasantries with Evan earlier. As for the meal, she felt little interest.
Just as she was about to decline, Chuck interjected eagerly, "Sara, you and Evan haven't seen each other in so long. It's thoughtful of him to visit right after returning and to book a room at the Drizzlewood Retreat—it's not a place just anyone can reserve on short notice. Let's go have lunch."
Seizing the moment, Evan added smoothly, "While chatting with your parents earlier, I learned you're hoping to secure a partnership with the Reed family. I might be able to help with that."
"Well, that's wonderful news!" Chuck exclaimed, visibly excited, "We can discuss it over lunch at the Drizzlewood Retreat."
Given how things were framed, Sara found it difficult to refuse. Besides, she needed to eat lunch somewhere anyway.
"Alright, let's go," she agreed.
A faint, satisfied smile touched Evan's lips.
Chuck turned to Stefan. "Stefan, you don't need to come. There's leftover food from yesterday—you can eat here."
Clearly intending to encourage something between Evan and Sara, Chuck had no desire for Stefan to tag along and complicate matters.
"Why shouldn't Stefan come?" Audrey protested at once, "Evan invited the whole family. Stefan is part of this household, too."
Before Chuck could reply, Sara looked toward Stefan and asked, "Can you drive?"
"Yes," Stefan replied evenly.
"Then you can drive my car," Sara said.
Chuck fell silent, swallowing whatever he had been about to say.
Sara's stance was clear enough.
A flicker of coldness passed through Evan's eyes, but he quickly smiled. "Mr. Stewart, let Stefan come along. It's just an extra place setting."
Having Stefan there might even work to his advantage. How else could he show off and put the other man in his place?
This wasn't kindness or generosity—Evan simply wanted to flaunt his advantages at the Drizzlewood Retreat, using Stefan as a foil to elevate himself.
To him, Evan was nothing more than a self-important clown he could crush effortlessly. Let him put on his little show.
