Even a child could figure out that anyone Bjorn treated with such respect must come from somewhere significant.
But what puzzled everyone most was how Stefan, an ex-con who had just gotten out of prison, could possibly know someone like Nina. She was a woman who seemed almost heaven-sent.
Once the situation was handled, Bjorn turned to Nina with an apologetic smile.
"Nina, this one's on me. I should've been more careful. You did me the favor of coming tonight, and this is what happens. I promise, nothing like this will ever happen again."
Nina smiled back, "Don't blame yourself. It's nothing. You're the host tonight—I know you're busy. Don't worry about us."
Bjorn nodded. Then he looked at Stefan. "Grandmaster Bryant, my apologies for the unpleasantness."
Stefan's tone was casual. "You're too kind. They're just a bunch of nobodies trying to stir up trouble. It doesn't bother me at all."
Marcus and Zoey had already slunk off to the side, but they still caught Stefan's remark.
Marcus' face turned bright red, then dark with rage. He was seething. Stefan had basically just called him a nobody.
Marcus fumed inwardly.
Just some ex-con loser. Who does he think he's playing? Riding that woman's coattails and acting like he's actually someone.
He was burning with fury and envy. He couldn't understand how Stefan knew someone like Nina—so important that even Bjorn treated her gently, and stunningly beautiful. The only woman who could rival her was Sara.
Zoey was also humiliated beyond words. Janet had slapped her in public, ruining her makeup. But with Nina's obvious importance, she didn't dare even think about revenge.
Zoey asked quietly, "Mr. Winter, who is that woman? Do you know?"
Marcus shook his head. "No idea. I'll ask around later. The auction's about to start—let's find our seats."
Zoey nodded. She couldn't stand being here any longer anyway. The two of them slipped away.
Meanwhile, Bjorn personally escorted Stefan and Nina to the front row, seating them in the best center spots.
Bjorn smiled at them and said, "Nina, Grandmaster Bryant, make yourselves comfortable. The auction's about to begin. I need to handle some behind-the-scenes matters. Once it's over, we'll have a proper chat."
