Chapter 173 Someone Hired You
“No one’s saving you, Shane Winter. Not tonight. Not ever,” Vance sneered.

The silver Desert Eagle in his hand spun effortlessly, a telltale sign he knew his way around a firearm.
He held his fire for the moment. His two associates were still mixed up in close combat with the bodyguards. A stray bullet could easily hit the wrong target.
His job was simple: keep the middle-aged man in the car. Once that target was down, the mission was over.
Inside the vehicle, a man in his forties sat in the back seat with hard features and a commanding presence. Despite the situation, his expression remained calm. Composed.
“Mr. Winter,” Trevor Winter, the driver, said, turning around. He was built like a brick wall, exuding a thick, powerful aura. “Let me go out there. Hold them off. You run. I swear we’ll buy you enough time.”
Shane shook his head slowly. “I just got to River City, and they were already waiting. This was planned. Which means there’s more where this came from. More attacks. More killers.” He reached for the door handle. “I’m getting out. I want to know who’s behind this.”
With that, Shane pushed open the car door and stepped out.
Trevor scrambled out after him, positioning his massive frame between Shane and the threat.
Three of the six bodyguards went flying. They hit the ground hard, coughing blood. Then they stopped moving.
The remaining three were wounded, barely holding their own against the two attackers. It was clear they were outmatched.
Shane’s eyes hardened. His six bodyguards-all of them at least Level 6 in the Hidden Sect Realm-had been torn apart by just two men. These killers were serious.
“You three,” Shane called out, his voice steady despite the carnage. “I don’t know you. I’ve never wronged you. So why this? Why an ambush?”
Vance let out a cold laugh, studying Shane with narrowed eyes. “Look at you. Calm as can be, even when you’re staring death in the face. I see why they say you’re the brightest hope of the Winter family in Ythara.”

After seeing Shane step down from the vehicle on his own, the other two men in black combat gear halted their attack and began closing in on him. They circled around, flanking Shane and Trevor, cutting off any escape route.
“Someone hired you,” Shane said flatly. “How much are they paying? I’ll give you ten times that. No questions asked.”
“Ten times?” Vance tilted his head. “I’m sure you could afford it. But money’s not the point. Reputation is.” His voice dropped, cold as ice. “So it doesn’t matter what you offer. Tonight, you die.”
“You know who I am. You know my family.” Shane’s voice was hard. “You’re not afraid of the Winter family coming for you?”
“The Winter family’s tough,” Vance admitted. “Top-tier in Ythara.” Then he smirked. “But the Bloodskulls Order? We don’t scare that easily.”
Shane’s eyes widened slightly. “The Bloodskulls Order? You’re Bloodskulls Order assassins?”
The Bloodskulls Order was the most infamous killer-for-hire outfit in the Dragon Kingdom. Their reach stretched across the whole world. The assassins of this organization were extremely cold-blooded and brutal.
And once they took a contract, they never failed. It was a point of pride.
If the Bloodskulls Order marked someone, the only smart move was to pick out a nice coffin.
“That’s right.” Vance’s smile widened. “I’m a silver-ranked assassin of the Bloodskulls Order. Say your prayers.”
He lunged forward, his body surging toward Shane with a palpable aura of lethal intent.
A bodyguard roared in anger and charged forward to meet the attack head-on.
However, with a single strike from Vance, the bodyguard was sent flying, unable to block even the slightest of his attacks.
“Run, Mr. Winter!” Trevor roared, charging forward to meet the attack.
The other two assassins moved, too, blurring toward Shane like shadows.
The last two bodyguards, wounded as they were, tried to intercept them.
But it was hopeless. They were cut down in seconds.
