Light footsteps approached the bathroom door. Then stopped.

"Did you find out?" Megan's voice drifted through the door, calm and unhurried. "Is it him? The one William mentioned in his letter?"

A cool female voice answered from the other side.

"Yes. Stefan was released from Dragon-Suppressing Prison four days ago. The timing matches what Mr. William Spencer wrote."

Megan was quiet for a moment, processing. "Tell me everything you found, Vivian."

Outside the door, Vivian began her report. "Three years ago, Stefan was imprisoned because of his girlfriend, Margery. After his release, he found her celebrating another man's birthday. He cut ties with her immediately and went to the Stewart family."

"The Stewart daughter, Sara, had been in a coma after a car accident. Word is, Stefan woke her up. Shortly after, for reasons unclear, he became engaged to her."

She continued. "He also treated Nicolas Myers' daughter, Rebecca. That connection came through Nina Reed—she brought Stefan to the hospital and introduced him."

Megan's eyes widened slightly. Nina?

In the bathtub, she shifted. The movement sent ripples across the water's surface—and more than ripples. Beneath the rose petals, something vast and soft shifted too, creating waves that had nothing to do with motion and everything to do with physics.

Through the floating petals, one might glimpse... evidence. Of abundance. Of generosity. The kind that made men forget their own names.

"How do Nina and Stefan know each other?"

"That's still unclear. Also—news from Mound City. The Prescott family is sending people to River City."

"Why?"

"Simon Prescott came to River City a few days ago. He's disappeared. No body has been found. No trace."

Megan leaned back against the tub, letting the information settle.

Everyone in Mound City's elite circles knew Simon had been pursuing Nina. Obsessively. Aggressively. To the point of losing all sense of proportion.

"So he came here for her." Megan's voice was thoughtful. "And now he's vanished.." She let that hang.

"So..." Vivian's voice was hesitant. "What should we do?"

Megan ordered, "I'll decide. Keep digging. Report anything new."

Besides, what can a young man just out of prison possibly offer that's worth this?
