Just as Alex emerged from the heavy door of the meeting room, wiping a faint smirk from his face, Evelyn was standing right in front of it—arms crossed, golden eyes locked on him like a hawk spotting prey.
The hallway light caught her golden hair, making it shimmer like threads of sunlight woven into waves that cascaded past her shoulders, framing a face flushed with determination and worry.
Her golden gown clung elegantly to her figure, the off-shoulder bodice embroidered with delicate filigree patterns that sparkled with every breath, the full skirt pooling slightly around her heels, paired with subtle gold hoop earrings and a thin choker that accentuated her slender neck.
She looked every bit the noble beauty, fierce and vulnerable all at once.
Seeing Alex, she met his eyes intensely, voice steady but edged with emotion. "We need to talk. Now."
Alex looked toward her, a flicker of resignation crossing his features. He sighed inwardly. ’Just my luck. Can’t even catch a breath.’
After that, he plastered on a bright, disarming smile, leaning casually against the doorframe. "So Evelyn, short time no see. Whatever can I do for you? Banquet not exciting enough?"
Evelyn didn’t smile back. Without a word, she grabbed his wrist firmly—her grip surprisingly strong for her delicate frame—and started dragging him away down the ornate hallway, past tapestries of ancient battles and suits of armor standing sentinel.
She pulled him into a nearby empty side room, a quiet parlor used for private audiences—plush velvet chairs arranged around a low marble table, heavy curtains drawn over tall windows muffling the distant cheers from the banquet, a crystal jug of water and glasses on a sideboard the only occupants.
Alex didn’t resist, letting her lead him inside with an amused raise of his eyebrow, hands in his pockets.
Evelyn slammed the door shut and turned the brass key in the lock with a decisive click, ensuring no interruptions.
Alex opened his mouth. "Hey, why are you locki—"
She whirled on him, putting a single finger to his lips, her touch soft but insistent, silencing him instantly. Her golden eyes bored into his, inches away. "First answer my questions. No dodging. Is it true about us forgetting everything about you?"
Alex’s playful demeanor faded. He sighed heavily, running a hand through his silver hair. "So Aurora told you everything, huh. She sure can’t keep her mouth shut when it matters."
Evelyn’s expression tensed, brows furrowing, lips pressing into a thin line as her grip on his wrist tightened slightly. "So it is true... huh."
Alex nodded slowly, meeting her gaze steadily. "There were consequences for turning back time on such a major scale—a universal backlash, you could say. And now I’m paying for it. Everyone will forget me, like I never existed here."
Evelyn became speechless, golden eyes widening in shock. She released his wrist, stepping back as if slapped, hand covering her mouth. Words failed her, the weight sinking in— the man who’d saved world, now erasing himself.
Alex softened, reaching out to gently tuck a stray golden lock behind her ear. "If you’re worried, don’t be. It’s not gonna stay this way forever. I’m leaving to resolve this issue—find a way to fix this issue. So don’t make that sad face, okay? It doesn’t suit you. I really miss that expressionless face of your today."
Suddenly, completely out of her usual poised character, Evelyn’s face twisted with anger. She lunged forward, grabbing Alex’s collar with both hands, knuckles white, yanking him close enough that their noses almost touched. "You knew it would happen, didn’t you?!" she shouted, voice echoing off the stone walls. "You knew there would be consequences, but you still did it!"
"Why did you do that, huh? Why the hell did you not try to be selfish—just like you always are? Why!"
Tears started flooding her golden eyes, spilling over her lashes and tracing glistening paths down her cheeks.
Suddenly Alex grabbed her hands, prying them free from his collar firmly but not harshly. "I’m now tired of explaining myself to everybody!" he said in a loud voice, frustration boiling over. "First everyone... then Alicia... and now you too!"
"Who do you think I did it all for? I did it for you guys—so all of you would at least have a home to go back to, a world worth living in, alright!"
Evelyn didn’t back down, tears streaming faster, voice cracking. "And who asked you to think about us? Then you alone pay this huge price and act like some tragic hero!"
Alex shot back, eyes flashing. "Then what else? What do you want me to do, huh? Tell me! Tell me!"
Evelyn’s breath hitched sharply, chest heaving as she opened her mouth, trying desperately to speak—words tumbling silently in her throat, choked by sobs. She couldn’t form them, golden eyes pleading and furious.
Alex deflated, the fight draining from him. He sighed deeply, shoulders slumping, and sat heavily on the nearby four-poster bed with its silk duvet. "I only did what I thought at the moment was right."
"And sure, now I don’t care what happens to me. But now I have a goal, and I’m leaving to achieve it. That’s all there is to it—nothing more and nothing less."
