After the surprise, Ariel Zimmerman’s eyes suddenly reddened, holding the little paperman in her palm, she asked eagerly,
"C-can you help me find Gregory Xander?"
To be honest, she was a bit scared.
Don’t be fooled by how brave she was during the show, that was only because she knew Scarlett and the others were around.
Now, she was all alone, and the mist looked suspiciously strange.
She was still frightened.
The little paperman couldn’t talk, but it seriously nodded at her and waved its hand, intending to reassure her.
Ariel didn’t understand and thought it was asking her to get closer, so she brought it near her face, staring at it.
The little paperman, awkwardly under her gaze, instinctively wanted to turn its head away.
But soon, as if sensing her fear, it looked at Ariel, and after a long moment, it suddenly walked two steps forward, then stood on tiptoe, and reached out its hand.
Its tiny hand lightly comforted Ariel’s face.
Clearly, it was just a little paperman, yet Ariel strangely felt the warmth of its touch.
The nervous fear in her heart seemed to dissipate instantly.
A reluctant smile finally appeared on her face.
She pressed it against her chest, whispering softly,
"Thank goodness, you’re still here."
...
Gregory Xander, rushing through the mountain, had a tense expression, and his fingertips slightly curled at his side.
He pursed his lips, silently sensing the location of his doppelganger, quickly approaching.
After a few more minutes of swift travel, he could feel the clear demon energy within the mist.
Perhaps because he was getting closer to the core area, the aura within the mist became more distinct, even faintly familiar.
Suddenly, as if a flash of light appeared in his mind, Gregory finally remembered what that familiar aura was, and the next second, a vague silhouette could be seen within the mist ahead.
A silhouette overlapping with his doppelganger’s location, though clad in ancient attire and within the mist, he recognized it with one glance.
His worried heart finally settled at this moment, he raised his voice, calling her name,
"Ariel Zimmerman!"
Ariel was seeking help from the little paperman on her chest when she suddenly heard a familiar voice nearby, and was momentarily stunned.
"Gregory·Paperman, did you hear that? It sounded like Gregory Xander’s voice to me."
Gregory·Paperman didn’t speak, just raised its hand to signal her to look ahead.
Ariel followed the direction pointed by the little paperman’s hand and saw Gregory Xander rapidly approaching her, stopping a meter away.
"Ariel Zimmerman."
He called her name once more.
Ariel’s eyes welled up with tears, a kind of emotional reunion of seeing a family member.
Seeing her looking so pitiful, Gregory knew she was about to cry, his gaze softened, and he instinctively wanted to step forward.
But she suddenly voiced out, cautiously stopping him,
"You stay right there!"
Gregory halted confusedly, hearing her speak with feigned calmness and composure,
"How... can you prove you’re really you?"
[How... can you prove you’re not something else in disguise?]
Strangely, Gregory was reminded of the time when she sought his help due to the Shadow Ghost’s harassment, and her cautious questioning when he arrived outside the hotel.
Though teary-eyed, she always remained vigilant.
A ghost might impersonate a familiar person to knock on the door, and by the same logic, within this mist barrier, a demon might take the form of a familiar person to deliberately approach.
Ariel was always cautious.
