Ariel Zimmerman looked at Gregory Xander in front of her, momentarily stunned, until Gregory turned his head, about to ask curiously.
She snapped back to reality, hurriedly asking,
"Isn’t this... a bit inconvenient?"
Although she said so, her body quickly and decisively lunged onto his back.
Thanks to Gregory’s daily martial arts training, he stood with a stable stance. Otherwise, with Ariel’s sudden leap, they both might have tumbled forward.
Ariel realized belatedly, secretly annoyed, just about to adjust her weight, but Gregory had already stood up steadily with her on his back.
Ariel instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck.
Gregory felt a brief choke but remained steady, simply saying,
"I’ll take you down the mountain first."
His voice, as usual, was rigid and emotionless, revealing nothing.
Carried by him, Ariel couldn’t see his expression, but from what she knew of him, even if she could see, he’d still wear that stern, unapproachable look.
Ariel didn’t know what he was feeling, whether he’d find her bothersome?
Or was he worried about the strange mist in the mountains?
As thoughts raced through her mind, she couldn’t help but break the silence between them.
"Do you know what this mist in the mountains is about? Wouldn’t it be inconvenient if we encounter danger with me on your back?"
Gregory’s footsteps were steady, his voice even steadier, without a hint of breathlessness, saying only,
"It shouldn’t be dangerous. The mist in the mountains is caused by the collision of Dragon Energy."
"Dragon?" Ariel was somewhat surprised, "Is it Dashiell?"
The nature of Dashiell was unknown to the others, but she knew.
Gregory said,
"It’s not Dashiell."
He was quite familiar with Dashiell’s aura.
Precisely because it wasn’t him, he didn’t recognize it at first.
And it wasn’t Simon either.
As for which dragon it was, Gregory had a vague guess, but to be certain, he needed to take her out of the mist first.
What was certain was if his guess was right, the dragon wasn’t targeting him or any ordinary person in the mountains.
All they needed to do was to stay away.
Musing over these thoughts, his responses to Ariel grew even more concise.
Ariel tried to start another topic, only to receive again those few-worded replies.
She stopped speaking, biting her lip silently.
Ariel suddenly fell silent, and just as Gregory noticed, he unexpectedly felt a restrained sob from his back.
She was crying.
He stopped abruptly.
Gregory’s body tensed, standing there, slightly turning his head, speaking with a tension even he hadn’t noticed,
"What’s wrong with you?"
Why was she crying again?
Was her foot hurting?
Various doubts ran through his mind, Gregory instinctively wanted to put her down and cast a pain relief spell on her.
However, Ariel on his back gave him no opportunity to do so.
Her arms still clung to his shoulders without moving, her body trembling slightly.
Perhaps because of his caring inquiry, the cry Ariel had been holding back broke loose in an instant.
All the grievances and sadness seemed to pour out at that moment.
She recalled his coldness and lack of response towards her,
The times he stood her up with no reason,
The cake she personally ruined,
And also, how he sheltered her from the rain, treated her injuries, brought her medicine, searched the mountains for her, and... carried her down the mountain.
Yet, even with all this, she still couldn’t figure him out.
