The taste of those potatoes and sweet potatoes was unbelievable.

The flavor lingered in his mind, and he caught himself savoring the memory before realizing the call was still connected. He quickly pulled himself together. “Ahem, anyway, the Commander and Mrs. Zaylee had no plans to visit the Schofield Castle today. Maybe you all got your wires crossed somewhere?”
On the other end of the line, Benjamin’s heavy, ragged breathing filled the silence. His mouth hung open, but no words came out, and his vision swam with black spots.
“Hello? Hello? Is there anything else? If not, I’m hanging up.” The driver waited a few seconds, then ended the call.
The monotonous drone of the disconnected line echoed through the quiet corner, ringing out with an almost cruel clarity.
Benjamin’s hand dropped, the phone hanging limply at his side. His face turned so pale he looked almost ghostly. his eyes empty.
Alessia’s knees buckled under her, and she almost collapsed, saved only by the quick reflexes of the butler at her side.
It was over.
Everything was over.
The lavish party they’d orchestrated, the in–laws they bragged about, the future that had looked so close they could touch it–every bit of it shattered and fell apart with a few casual words from the Hewitts driver.
Inside the ballroom, the guests who still waited in ignorance started to shift. Their eyes, once full of hope, turned sharp and speculative, and then slid toward mockery.
Benjamin felt the sting of their silent laughter pierce through him.
He and Alessia, desperate and frantic, retreated into a side room, racking their brains for any excuse to salvage the situation.
Maybe the Commander got called away for urgent military business. Maybe Mrs. Zaylee felt unwell. Anything to explain why the Hewitts never arrived.
But the very thing they dreaded most was about to happen.
Molly had already grown sick of Zachary and Hannah’s fake affection. Watching those two show off left her nauseated.
She hung around a bit longer out of politeness, but eventually made up an excuse to step outside for air.
On her way back from the restroom, she passed the half–open door to the side room.

Chapter 137 Humiliated
Inside, she heard frantic, angry voices filter out in bits and pieces.
“Haven’t planned to go out…”
“I don’t think there’s going to be another ceremony..”
“Got it wrong… got your wires crossed somewhere?“…”

Molly paused, curiosity getting the best of her. She listened, and her expression twisted in disbelief and disgust.
The Schofields, she thought, are something else.
She hurried off to find her mother, who was chatting with an old friend. She grabbed her mom by the arm. “Mom, let’s go. I’ve had enough. This whole thing’s a bust.”
Her mother looked surprised and tried to keep her voice low. “Molly, let’s just wait a little longer. Commander Hewitt and Mrs. Zaylee could show up any minute. You always said you wanted to meet Mrs. Zaylee. What if you miss her?”
Molly rolled her eyes, her patience gone. “Mom, I’m telling you, they’re not coming. Commander Hewitt and Mrs. Zaylee never planned to show up.”
She didn’t care who heard her, and didn’t bother to lower her voice.
The whole ballroom went quiet as everyone turned to look at her.
They heard it.
“Molly, don’t say things like that!” Her mother forced a laugh and tried to shush her, but the damage was done.
Molly shrugged, unbothered. “I’m not making it up. I just heard Benjamin and Alessia talking about it in the antechamber. They got in touch with the Hewitts, and the driver said the Commander and Mrs. Zaylee spent the whole day at home. There was never any plan for them to come here. We’ve all been wasting our time.”
Her words hit the room like a rock dropped in a pond, sending shockwaves everywhere.
“What?!”
“They never intended to come?”
“So what is this party even for? Are the Schofields just putting on a show for themselves?”
“This is outrageous. Did they just trick us?”
The whole ballroom erupted with angry chatter, disbelief, and outrage.
All the anxious whispers and rumors found their target, and the truth came out in the most humiliating way possible.
