His gaze swept across the farm, which was orderly, efficient, and alive with movement. Then it landed on Melton’s work uniform. After a moment, he asked something that made both Melton and Humus freeze.
“Melton, is your farm… still hiring?”
“Huh?” Melton didn’t react right away.
Humus also looked at Orion in confusion.
Orion turned his head and met Melton’s gaze with a calm, stubborn look, almost as if he was looking right through him to the real owner of this land. “I’m serious. I want to stay here with Humus and work for Ms. Schofield.”
Melton was completely stunned.
He didn’t expect Orion to say anything like that.
Even if no one valued Orion, he was still the Salazars‘ eldest son.
And he was still an active–duty soldier in the Third Military, once an S–level rising star with a future that seemed unstoppable. Even after falling on hard times, it still didn’t feel like he belonged in the same category as someone applying to be a farmhand.
“Orion, are you serious?” Melton frowned. “Your father and the Third Military… do you really think they’ll allow it?”
Orion gave a dry, self–deprecating laugh that carried exhaustion. Strangely, there was even a bit of relief. “In my father’s eyes, I’ve been a useless ‘half–cripple‘ for a long time. As long as I don’t embarrass the Salazars, he doesn’t care what I do. He might even prefer the quiet. As for the military…” He paused. “I’m a B–level injured soldier now, stuck with a paper job in logistics, ignored by everyone. If I submit my retirement, the report probably won’t even reach a higher officer’s desk. They might even be glad I’m opening a spot for someone else.”
His voice was still flat, but there was a cold, tired heaviness underneath.
Humus’s eyes turned red. He looked away.
Melton fell silent.
He understood Orion.
He had fought his way out of that same kind of abandonment, that same feeling of being pushed aside.

This farm had given him a second life–not only in body, but also a place to belong and
reason to matter.

If Orion could find the same thing here, then maybe this really was an escape.
Melton searched Orion’s eyes and saw the determination there, the point of no return. He knew his old comrade hadn’t said it on a whim.
“I’ll take you to Boss,” Melton finally said. “But she has her own rules and standards. Whether she accepts you or not isn’t my call.”
“I understand. Thanks, Melton.”
Melton quickly informed Fiona, then led Orion and Humus toward the farm.
Elizabeth was inside the newly built seedling nursery greenhouse, guiding workers as they treated the seeds.
“Boss,” Melton called out respectfully from the greenhouse entrance.
Elizabeth looked up, saw him, and then noticed the two very different men standing behind him.
One was young, yet carried a lingering quiet intensity and sharp edge. The other was older, with steady eyes full of loyalty.
She shook the water off her hands and walked out.
“What’s the matter?” Her eyes landed on Orion, giving him her usual direct, assessing look.
Melton stepped aside and introduced them. “Boss, this is Orion Salazar–my old comrade from the Third Military. And this is Humus. He’s the Salazars‘ longtime butler and also a
veteran.”
