A man in his 30s lowered his head, looking at the gray device on his wrist, which was stripped of all access clearance. It would never display any recruitment notices for him.
“I used to…” he said softly. “I used to fly transport spaceships. Civilian Class–3 license.”
Someone nearby glanced at him.
“Back then, I did freelance runs, hauling cargo for people. Then there was contraband mixed in with one shipment. I got caught, lost my license, and was sentenced to ten years of exile.”
Ten years of exile wasn’t unusual. On Planet A001, people were either exiled because their mental power collapsed or because they committed crimes.
Their real mistake was choosing a path of wrongdoing even in exile.
He lifted his head and looked at the sky beyond the fence. It was blue, vast, and occasionally cut across by passing spaceships.
“I guess I’ll never touch a spaceship’s controls again in this lifetime.”
Someone patted his shoulder and said nothing.
Farther away, a thin young man squatted on the ground, idly scratching patterns into the dirt with a stick.
He was 17. His crime was theft.
He had stolen a wealthy man’s storage button.
Because of that man’s influence, he received a harsh sentence and was sent to Planet A001.
As a minor, he couldn’t survive there on his own. With no other option, he willingly became a lackey of the Black Rats.
When the Black Rats were wiped out, he thought he was done for.
He never expected that he would be transferred to the labor camp. He had food, work, and even instructors teaching them how to
farm.
At first, he thought it was a blessing.
But now, hearing about internal recruitment and all the excited talk about spaceships, escort duty, and their own farm team, he suddenly dropped his gaze and drove his stick hard into the dirt.
He remembered when he first arrived on Planet A001.
If he had just held on a little longer back then, would he also have become internal staff here?
Would he be able to see that announcement now?
Would he have a chance to apply?
He didn’t even know if he could fly a spaceship, but he wanted to try.

But he didn’t have the qualifications.
He threw the stick aside and buried his face in his knees.
By evening, work was over.
Peter finished packing his tools and walked back to the dorm with his group.

All along the way, the talk about internal recruitment filled the air–outside the cafeteria, under dorm buildings, even by the public showers.
“Are you applying?”
“Of course. No harm trying. What if I get picked?”
“I heard a lot of retired soldiers are applying. Competition is going to be intense.”
“Let it be intense. It doesn’t cost anything to apply anyway.”
Peter, didn’t say a word.
Back in the dorm, he lay on his bed for a while, then sat up again, staring blankly at his wrist device.
Tasha was right. He technically met the requirements.
But he still felt uncertain.
Those retired soldiers had actually served. They were so capable and reliable. They could even make others feel safe just by standing there.
What was he?
He was just a drifter who grew up in a scrapyard, only learned to write a couple of months ago, and whose biggest experience was visiting Mercury Plaza with Elizabeth once.
What made him think he could compare?
But the idea of becoming a security escort wouldn’t leave his head,
He remembered the soldiers he had seen yesterday.
When Onyx came to the farm, he hugged Owen and cried like crazy. Peter had watched from a distance. For some reason, he felt a lump in his throat.
He understood what comrades meant.
He understood what it meant to protect someone with their lives.
He had never had anything like that.
In the scrapyard, kids looked out for themselves. They might scavenge together today, but they might fight over half a loaf of bread the next day.
He had seen too many people die from starvation, illness, or being beaten to death.
