Chapter 474 The Boy Who firearms of Meche
Chapter 474 The Boy Who Dreams of Mechs
Enola took a couple more steps forward and got a clearer look at the figure.
“Newman?”
He lifted his head, his eyes red, tear tracks still wet on his cheeks.
“Enola…” His voice was hoarse, like someone had a hand around his throat.
Enola walked over and crouched down in front of him.
“What’s going on? Why are you sitting out here?”
$
Newman sniffled and tried to speak, but his lip quivered, and he started crying all over again.

He was a few years younger than Enola, in his early 20s, small and thin, never one to say much around the store, though always quick on his feet.
Enota remembered he was taking night classes, working during the day, and studying at night, running rimself ragged, but she had never once heard him complain.
“Enola,” he said, wiping at his eyes, “they cut my pay. Thirty percent.”
Enola went quiet.
“There wasn’t much left to begin with,” Newman said. “Rent, food, getting to and from work, that all just barely fit in my budget each month. And now 30 percent is gone…”
He couldn’t finish the sentence and buried his face in his knees, shoulders shaking hard.
Enola looked at him, her chest aching.
“Is it the night school,” she asked gently, “the tuition you can’t cover?”
Newman nodded, his voice muffled. “Next month’s the deadline for next semester’s tuition. I’ve been saving up forever, and I’m still a big chunk short.”
He lifted his head, his eyes red.
“Enola, I want to learn mech repair. I’ve loved it ever since I was a kid. I literally dream about repairing mechs. But I don’t have the money, so all I can do is night school and work during the day. I kept telling myself if I just worked hard enough, I’d find a way to get the certification…”
He started crying again, his voice breaking up.
“But now I can’t even afford tuition. Am I… is this all I’m ever going to be?”
Enola looked at him, and a memory of herself from just a few days ago surfaced.
That morning, standing at the front door of the Seafarm Group store, watching the crowd flow by, feeling that same hopelessness.
Back then, she had thought the same thing. That this was all she would ever be.

She said solity. “do you want to give Tycoon Farm a shot?”
Newman paused and looked up.
“You mean… the farm that stole our business?”
Enola smiled.
“I’m one of those people from the farm that stole your business.”
Newman’s eyes went wide.
“You…”
“After we quit, we all went over and applied at Tycoon Farm,” Enola said. “The pay’s about the same as Seafarm Group, but they cover room and board, overtime gets overtime pay, and holidays pay triple wages.”
Newman’s jaw dropped.
“T-Triple wages?”
“Triple.” Enola nodded. “And they’re still hiring. Newman, with what you’re studying for mech repair, they’re going to need somebody like you. Spaceships, transport vehicles, all kinds of equipment, somebody has to keep them running.
She paused and looked him in the eye.
“How about it? Want to try?”
Newman sat there frozen, tears still drying on his face, but his eyes slowly started to brighten.
Tycoon Farm’s hiring office at Mercury Plaza was set up in a small room on the east side of the plaza.
The office wasn’t big, but it was clean and tidy.
A sign stood outside the door, with the words “Now Hiring” in big letters, and below them a list of positions. Stall sales, warehouse and logistics, support crew, spaceship technician, equipment maintenance…
Newman stood outside the office, his legs feeling weak.
Today, he had worn the nicest shirt he owned, which honestly just meant the only one without a frayed collar.
He had combed his hair and rehearsed his introduction in front of the mirror several times.
But now that he was actually here, he suddenly didn’t have the guts to walk in.
What if they didn’t want him?
What if they thought he wasn’t certified yet, that his skills weren’t good enough?
What if…
A thousand “what ifs” spun through his head, but his feet felt like they were stuck to the floor, refusing to move.
