Newman’s heart sank, and he quickly said, “I, I’m in night school for mech repair. I’ve been at it for two years now. I’ve got the fundamentals down. I know how to use the tools. I just… I just haven’t finished the program yet…

His voice trailed off, getting smaller and smaller.

Tyson looked at him without a word.

The silence made Newman’s skin crawl.

He was just about to say it was fine if it didn’t work out when Tyson suddenly spoke up. “Those parts on the table. You recognize

them?”

Newman paused and looked down.

The parts were laid out in pieces, but he recognized them at a glance.

“These are… the core components of a universal power converter? The V-7 model?” Tyson’s eyebrows lifted, his interest clearly piqued. “How did you know?”

Newman stepped closer and pointed at the parts, his hand shaking a little, but his eyes shining. “This one’s the voltage regulator for the energy input. This one’s the heat sink for the conversion core. This one’s the current limiter on the output side… The V-7 model’s most distinctive feature is the three-layer heat sink. The older models only had two layers, and the new one added a third, which boosts heat dissipation efficiency by 40 percent…”

The faster he talked, the smoother it came out, like someone had flipped a switch in his head.

Tyson’s casual expression shifted into something more focused.

He pointed at one of the parts and asked, “If this one breaks, how do you fix it?”

“Depends on how bad it is,” Newman said. “If it’s a surface crack, you can patch it with a low-temp weld. If the internal wiring is severed, you have to take it apart and rerun the lines. If the core is fried… you don’t bother fixing it. Just swap it out. Once a V-7 core burns out, it’s done. Even if you fix it, it won’t hold up.”

Tyson looked at him for a couple of seconds, then suddenly grinned. “Not bad, kid. You’ve got something.”

Newman froze, and the next thing he heard was…

“You’re hired,” Tyson said. “Spaceship maintenance position.”

Newman’s mind went blank. “R-Really?”

Tyson said, “Really. But the job site is on Planet A001, our farm’s main base. Are you good with that?”

Newman didn’t even hesitate. “Yes!”

Tyson chuckled at the eager look on his face.

“Hold on, let me finish. Once you’re on Planet A001, room and board are covered. Since you’ve only got the theory down and haven’t put it into practice, you’ll start out shadowing one of the senior mechanics, learning as you work. We’ve got fully licensed mech repair engineers on staff, and trust me, they know way more than your night school instructors. You’ll pick it up faster

rking with them than you ever would at night school. As for the pay.”

Newman stood there feeling like he was in a dream-

Even the three-month probationary salary alone was more than what he was making now, with room and board on top of it, and he’d get to learn ship repair from real pros.

This was the kind of good fortune he had never even let himself imaginé,

“I, I’m in!” His voice was shaking. “When can I start?”

“Whenever,” Tyson said. “There’s a spaceship heading back to Planet A001 tomorrow. If everything’s set on your end, you can fly out tomorrow.”

“No problem! No problem at all!” Newman nodded, his head bobbing like an eager kid.

Tyson pulled up the employment contract. “All right then, if we’re set, sign it.”

Newman looked at the contract, his hands shaking hard.

He read the salary figure two more times to be sure. It was higher than what he had been making at Seafarm Group.

And that was just the three-month probationary salary.

Once he was made permanent, it would be even higher.

He signed.

The moment he finished, he suddenly felt like he might cry.

Not because he was sad, but because it turned out that in this world, if you worked hard, you really could find a path that led

somewhere different.

When Newman walked back into the Seafarm Group store, it was the slowest part of the afternoon.

A few employees were standing around the register chatting, and when they saw him come in, every pair of eyes turned to look.

“Hey, Newman’s back.”

“I heard you quit?”

“You really went to that farm?”

Newman nodded without a word and walked straight to the employee break room.

He had to turn in his uniform and name badge.

Whispers followed behind him.

“He actually did it…”

“What’s so great about that farm anyway?”
