The Farming Saint in the Starry Wasteland (Elizabeth Schofield) novel Chapter 481

Chapter 481 Final Moments

But Bukowski’s shout burst through the communicator. “Don’t stop! Keep moving!”

Felix and Olivia hesitated

But in that brief moment, the swarm of Crackshell Crabs had already reached Clara.

“Go!” Clara shouted with the last of her strength. “Don’t worry about me! Just runt

Felix gritted his teeth and turned to keep running.

Tears burst from Olivia’s eyes, but she didn’t stop either.

She knew that stopping meant death. Clara was beyond saving now. She could not let Clara’s death be for nothing

Clara watched her teammates disappear deeper and deeper into the shadows of the jungle.

Nathaniel was running the fastest of all, having already overtaken Felix and Olivia, desperately pushing his way forward.

It suddenly hit her. Nathaniel was the squad’s scout, light-armored and the fastest on the team. He had beer, at the back of the group this whole time, not because he could not keep up, but because he had been waiting for a chance.

A chance for someone else to take the hit for him.

He had been waiting for a chance to use someone else as a shield.

The Crackshell Crab swarm had already reached her.

The nearest one was less than 30 feet away. Its giant claws opened wide, and bits of flesh from some unknown creature still clung to its dark red shell.

Clara slowly stood up and turned to face the swarm.

Her mech was blaring warnings. The energy indicator had turned completely red. The hydraulic joints screamed with sharp grinding noises.

Blood dripped from her palms where sharp rocks had cut her during the fall, but she couldn’t even feel the pain anymore.

Clara stared at the black mass of crabs and suddenly felt the absurdity of it all.

It wasn’t like she had never thought about dying before.

Mercenaries always died sooner or later.

She had imagined being torn apart by mutant beasts, shot by stray bullets, or betrayed by employers.

But she had never imagined being pushed into death by her own teammate.

The person she had desperately tried to save had shoved her toward death instead.

Clara took a deep breath and activated the last remaining energy in her mech.

She was nobody important. Just a mercenary, an ordinary person who sold her life for money. No family, no one to miss her, no one who would rememberher when she was gone. But she would not die on her knees.

“Come on,” she whispered as she tightened her grip on her energy sword.

The first Crackshell Crab lunged at her.

Clara dodged sideways and slashed her sword across its shell, creating a horrible screesh of grinding metal.

The shell cracked open, spraying dark green fluid everywhere.

The crab shrieked and swept its massive claw sideways at her. Clara dropped low, spun, and drove her sword through its entire head plate.

One, two, three…

She lost count of how many she killed.

Her mech was falling apart, the glow of her energy sword growing dimmer with every second, one shoulder plate already ripped away, the hydraulic lines in her left arm exposed and hissing with sparks.

She was soaked in the reeking fluids of the Crackshell Crabs, mixed with her own blood. But she kept killing.

Then another crab lunged forward and clamped its claw around her energy sword.

Clara yanked hard, but the sword wouldn’t come free.

At the same time, another Crackshell Crab charged from the side, its giant claw snapping toward her waist…

The instant her waist armor shattered, a wave of horrible pain exploded through her body.

Clara looked down and saw a deep wound ripped across her stomach, blood pouring out rapidly.

But there was no time to care.

She released the energy sword, pulled the backup dagger from her belt with her right hand, and stabbed it hard into the crab’s eye.

The creature twitched violently and released its grip. Clara staggered backward several steps before collapsing against a tree.

She lowered her head and looked at her mech.

It was ruined.

One shoulder guard was gone. The chest armor was cracked apart. Her left arm could no longer move. The power system in her legs had completely failed.

Slowly, she slid down the tree trunk and sat on the ground.

The endless swarm of Crackshell Crabs surrounded her.

But strangely, they didn’t attack right away.

Instead, they formed a circle around her, almost like they were enjoying the final moments of their prey.
