The footsteps came at a steady pace. Calm. Unhurried Every step carried the confidence of someone shaped by years in the military.
Trevor was home.
Zaylee set down the crab claw in her hand and calmly wiped her fingers with a napkin. A knowing smile curved on her lips. Trevor had been busy at the First Military headquarters these past few days. She had expected him home sometime that evening. Instead, he came back more than half a day early.
Looks like things on his side had gone smoother than expected.
When Trevor appeared at the entrance of the living room, Zaylee’s attention was immediately drawn to the person behind him.
Trevor had brought someone with him.
The man wore a neatly tailored dark gray outfit. Tall, straight–backed, and steady on his feet. The moment he stepped into the room, his eyes locked directly onto the plates still spread across the long dining table.
More specifically, onto the bright red Crackshell Crabs sitting on those plates.
His gaze lingered for about half a second before casually moving away, replaced by an expression that practically said, “I was just stopping by.”
“Jacob came too?” Zaylee asked with curiosity. “Don’t tell me you two brought work home with you.”
“Old Jacob cornered me outside the headquarters,” Trevor explained while taking off his coat and hanging it by the door. His voice carried both helplessness and amusement. “He said he had something important to discuss face–to–face. I told him I was heading home for dinner, and he said perfect, we could talk while eating.”
Standing half a step behind Trevor, Jacob added with a perfectly straight face, “There really is official business.”
His tone was serious. His expression was serious. But his eyes drifted once again toward the glossy Crackshell Crabs on the table.
That tiny movement did not escape Zaylee.
She could not help laughing.

Without exposing him, she simply made an elegant gesture toward the table. “Since you have business to discuss, sit down and take your time. Eliza just sent over these Crackshell Crabs. They’re still hot.”
The moment Jacob heard the words Crackshell Crab, his pace noticeably quickened. On the surface, however, he still maintained the calm dignity expected of a chief of staff.
He sat down across from them, forcing his gaze away from the spicy crab before looking at Zaylee seriously. “Zaylee, I truly do have important business this time.”
After saying that, he paused, as if organizing his thoughts.
Zaylee waited patiently, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

Trevor had just accepted a cup of coffee from Jeremy. Hearing that, his hand froze in midair for a second before he shook his head helplessly.
He did not stop Jacob. Instead, he glanced toward Zaylee with a look that clearly said, “See? I told you.
Zaylee laughed and pushed both types of crabs toward Jacob. “Eat first. We can talk afterward. No rush”
Jacob stopped pretending to be polite.
The way he picked up the crab cracker and seafood pick was smooth and practiced.
