CHAPTER 15
Lisa’s hands trembled with rage as she slid into the passenger seat of Ben’s luxury sedan. Her face was still flushed with humiliation, her perfectly applied makeup doing nothing to hide the fury burning in her eyes.
“That bastard,” she hissed, slamming the car door shut. “How dare he humiliate me like that? In public! With some rich woman he probably just met!”
Ben started the engine, his expression carefully sympathetic as he glanced at her. “Lisa, you need to calm down. Getting worked up won’t help anything.”
“Calm down? Calm down?” Lisa’s voice rose to a near-shriek. “Did you see what just happened in there? He had me thrown out! Me! I’m the CEO of BaiShui Group, and he had me thrown out like common trash!”
“Technically, it was his friend who did that,” Ben pointed out gently, pulling into traffic. “The Vinda woman.”
“Because he put her up to it!” Lisa snapped. “This is all Alex’s doing. He’s trying to get revenge on me for-for-”
“For what?” Ben asked innocently. “For being concerned about my wellbeing after the fire? For showing basic human compassion?”
“Exactly!” Lisa seized on his words. “He’s jealous. Insanely, pathetically jealous. He can’t stand the thought of me having any relationships outside of our marriage, so he’s lashing out like a petty child.”
Ben nodded slowly, a small smile tugging at his lips. “You’re absolutely right. Alex has always been narrow-minded. I tried to tell you that before, but you were too kind-hearted to see it. He’s the type of man who needs to control everything, who can’t handle the fact that his wife is more successful than him.”
“Yes!” Lisa grabbed onto Ben’s analysis like a lifeline. “That’s exactly what it is. He’s always been intimidated by my success. And now that I’ve finally built something real with BaiShui Group, now that I have a business partner who actually understands my vision, he can’t handle it.”
“It’s sad, really,” Ben said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. “He saved some random woman from a fire, and now she’s probably throwing herself at him. He’s using her wealth and connections to hurt you, to make himself feel important.”
“That’s disgusting,” Lisa muttered. “Using that woman like that. Leading her on just to get back at me.”
“Exactly. He’s manipulating her.” Ben reached over and squeezed Lisa’s hand. “But you can’t let him win, Lisa. If you back down now, if you compromise, it’ll only prove to him that his petty tactics work. He’ll think he was right all along.”

Lisa’s jaw tightened. “You’re right. If I apologize or show any weakness, it would be like admitting I did something wrong. And I didn’t do anything wrong! I was just helping a friend, a colleague who needed support.”
“Of course you were,” Ben soothed. “You’re one of the most compassionate, caring people I know. Alex is just too selfish to see that.”
“The more he acts like this, the less I want to compromise,” Lisa said, her voice hardening with resolve. “I won’t give him the satisfaction of thinking he’s won. I won’t admit to wrongdoing when I’ve done nothing wrong.”
“Good,” Ben said firmly. “You’re a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need to justify her actions to anyone, especially not to a man who abandoned you at a restaurant to go off with some rich bimbo.”
Lisa nodded, her expression growing colder. “You’re right. I’m done with Alex. Done trying to make him understand. Done caring about what he thinks.”
“That’s the spirit.” Ben’s smile widened. “Maybe we should just focus on work for now. The Harrison Industries merger is coming up, and we need to finalize those contracts.”
“Yes,” Lisa agreed, already pulling out her phone to check emails. “Work. That’s what matters. Not Alex and his childish games.”
