After finishing his speech, Laurent stepped back, allowing Jasper to come forward again. He offered a few more words of encouragement, then dismissed the meeting and instructed each team’s instructors to re- explain the rules.

Ava stood near the rear, but after the mixed–team reorganization, she ended up at the very front of her new formation. Unfortunately, that team was positioned dead center–directly across from Laurent.

Ava held her expression stiff, doing everything she could to stay composed. She tried not to think about it, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that his eyes kept landing on her, sending her nerves into a tailspin.

After the meeting ended, no one left immediately. Students gathered in small groups, buzzing excitedly about their chief instructor. It was the first time Ava realized just what Laurent represented in the eyes of the male students.

“Mom, Dad, look at me–I actually ended up training under Major Caswell! I can’t wait to brag to my brother!”

“Freshmen from the military academy next door are gonna be sick with jealousy. Major Caswell graduated from First Military Academy, yet instead of returning there, he became chief instructor here at Starry Heavens University!”

“I… I’m fine.” Ava brushed her hand away and asked, “Are you and Noelle on the same team?”

Zoey shook her head. “Nope! But Noelle ended up paired with Naomi. Lucky girl!

What about you? Which girls are in your group? Let me see if I know any of them.”

Ava pressed her lips together. “Malory Rayner. And someone named Holly Thompson.”

“Malory?” Zoey’s mouth fell open as she stared at Ava in disbelief. “Your luck… How did they end up grouping you two together?”

She knew the two of them didn’t get along. Even though Malory hadn’t caused trouble for Ava recently, being assigned to the same team as someone one disliked was still the definition of bad luck.

“Actually… Malory’s changed a lot lately,” Ava defended.

Early the next morning, the freshmen were transported to the perimeter of the wilderness–survival site. And a stern–looking captain led Ava’s team off the vehicle.

“Seven days,” he said. “If you reach the final checkpoint, you pass. If you quit halfway, your credits are revoked.
