With the freshman welcome gala drawing closer, everyone had been busy preparing their performances. Lately, the others had been squeezing in rehearsal whenever they could find the time. Compared to them, Ava seemed almost too relaxed.

That afternoon, she was on her way to the dance studio to look for Malory and the others.

As she passed one of the music rooms, a beautiful melody floated out through the doorway.

Ava slowed to a stop.

The piece was elegant and flowing, and the performer had real skill. The notes moved with ease, polished and controlled, rare enough that even a casual listener could tell it was beautifully done.

By the time the music gradually faded, Ava could not help stepping closer and glancing through the half–open door.

A young man sat before a white piano.

As the final note died away, he slowly raised his head.

His eyes met hers at the doorway.

A flicker of surprise crossed Ava’s face.

It was Stellan.

They had only met once before.

Before she could say anything, Stellan spoke first, “Ava. Are you here to use the piano room?”

Ava shook her head. “Hi, Stellan. No, I’m not here for the room. I was just passing by and heard someone playing. It sounded really beautiful, so I stopped to listen for a while. I didn’t disturb you, did I?”

A small smile touched Stellan’s lips. “Thank you. You didn’t disturb me.”

Then he asked, “Where are you headed?”

“I’m going to the dance studio to find my friends.” Ava gave him a slight smile. “You can keep going. I won’t bother you anymore.”

Stellan pressed one finger down on a key, and a low note echoed softly through the room. “See you, Ava.”

Ava hesitated for a moment, then gave in to her curiosity. “Stellan, what was the name of the piece you were just playing? It was really lovely.”

She still had not fully decided what to perform for the upcoming gala. Yet the moment she heard that melody, an idea had suddenly come to her. If I play this on the lute, it’ll probably sound amazing.

Stellan watched her leave. After she was gone, he lowered his gaze and began to play “Midsummer Nocturne” once more.

By the time Ava reached Dance Studio No. 3, she found Malory, Zoey, Noelle, and Naomi all already there.

Naomi and Malory were in the middle of correcting Zoey’s movements, breaking them down bit by bit. Off to one side, Noelle was practicing with a sword in hand, her movements fast and sharp as she cut through the air. She looked every bit like a wandering swordswoman from an old legend.

Ava stepped inside quietly without saying a word.

Noelle spotted her first.

“Ava, you’re here!”

She finished her set with a final flourish, then immediately headed over.

Ava set down her shoulder bag and smiled. “I came to see how all of you were doing. Noelle. that looked amazing.”

Zoey heard that from across the room and immediately stopped. “Noelle, are you talking nonsense about me again in front of Ava?”

By then, Naomi and Malory had also come over.

Naomi looked at Ava and asked, “What about you? What are you planning to do for the welcome gala? You’ve barely said a word this whole time. Compared to the rest of us, you’re way too calm.”

Ava answered simply, “Me? I’m going to play an instrument. Nothing too complicated.”

Malory looked curious. “An instrument? Piano?”

Then she shifted the conversation. “How’s everything with Zoey? Have you and Naomi finalized the choreography yet?”

Malory and Naomi exchanged a glance before admitting honestly, “Not really. It’s been… difficult.”

Hearing that, Ava looked toward Zoey. “If dancing really isn’t working, then why not change to something else?”

Zoey frowned. “Change to what? Singing? I’m not exactly amazing at that either. Dancing clearly isn’t my thing. I’ve learned a couple of instruments before, but only halfway. None of it is good enough to take onstage.”

Ava studied her for a second before offering a serious suggestion. “Have you ever considered doing a recitation instead?
