“You look happy,” Ethan said. “Sounds like good news.”

Ava gave a small hum and nodded. “Queenie messaged me. Professor Montclair found her an internship, and she’s already buried herself in work. Seeing her get better and better really makes me happy.”

Ethan said, “She’s always had a strong core. To recover herself this quickly and start building a new life… things should only get better for her from here.”

“That’s what I think too.” Ava’s voice cooled slightly. “Now all that’s left is to wait and see what kind of punishment those people get. As for Rodney and Jerome… even if they died a hundred times, it still wouldn’t be enough.”

Ethan reached out and rubbed the top of her head. “Queenie’s matter is basically settled now. It’s time you turn your attention back to yourself.”

Because of Queenie, Ava had poured nearly all of her extra energy these past days into following that situation, on top of school and training. She had even spoken less with Malory and the others than usual.

As for the men around her, she had been paying them even less attention.

Ava stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Ethan’s waist. “Thank you for helping me this whole time.”

Ethan smoothed her hair with one hand and pressed a light kiss to the top of her head. “Laurent is coming back. Once he arrives, the private coaching can stop. He’ll take over your training after that.”

Ava looked up at him in surprise. “But he never told me he was coming back. I haven’t gotten any message from him.”

“He told me,” Ethan said. “He asked how you’ve been lately, and I told him everything.”

Ava pressed further. “Isn’t he supposed to return to the military?”

“He traded favors with someone. He helped a friend handle a mission, and in exchange, the other side got him permission to stay on Capitol Planet a bit longer.

“Besides, the struggle over that eastern front command post still hasn’t settled. Going back now wouldn’t be a good move for him. If he can avoid stepping into that mess, all the better.”

Then Ethan added, “Laurent and I already discussed it. He’ll accompany you to the competition, and after it ends, he’ll go back to his unit.”

As he spoke, his brows drew together slightly, and he let out a quiet sigh.

“By then, neither Keith nor I will be able to go with you. Ryan’s work has him running everywhere too, so his schedule won’t allow it. Mason might manage to stay with you for a few days, but he won’t be able to remain beside you the whole time.”

“So, Laurent is the best choice. He can stay beside you and make sure nothing happens.”

Ava laughed a little. “The way you’re talking makes it sound like I’m about to walk into some massive danger. Won’t teachers be going with us too?”

“It’s better to be careful,” Ethan replied. “Things have happened before. If something really does go wrong, I won’t be comfortable leaving your safety entirely to others. If Laurent is there, at least I can worry less.”

Ava blinked. “What, you really think I could run into a mutant?”

“That isn’t impossible.”

Ava almost laughed and sighed at the same time. “No way I’m that unlucky, right? First time going abroad for a competition, and I end up running into a mutant?”
