Joselyn’s forehead was slick with perspiration, and when she snuck a glance at Ava, the sight only made things worse. Ava had already worked through several questions while she’d barely scraped out one

answer.

The more she panicked, the blanker her mind became. Joselyn slid her foot under the desk and nudged Ava’s leg.

Ava turned to look at her, and Joselyn whispered, “The answers. Let me peek.”

Up at the front of the room, Keith cleared his throat. “For those of you who couldn’t be bothered to pay attention in class or review the material, I’ve already given you an open-book exam. If you still can’t pas an open-book test, that’s a personal problem.”

Joselyn rolled her eyes so hard it nearly hurt. She was absolutely certain that was aimed directly at her. Next semester, she was not signing up for this man’s class under any circumstances. Picking this elective had been a catastrophic error of judgment, and she had no idea what she’d done to get on his bad side, bu he’d been on her case all semester long.

And now, at finals, he was still going. It was like he was personally invested in watching her fail. Joselyn kept every word of that internal rant locked firmly behind her teeth and made a show of flipping through her textbook like she knew what she was looking for.

As elective exams went, the questions weren’t actually that brutal. Whatever Keith said about grades being hard to earn, he’d clearly drawn the line at being genuinely ruthless. He wasn’t actually trying to sink

anyone.

Ava moved through the paper at a steady pace and reached the last two extended response questions near the end. Those two had a real bite to them, but skipping both and being careful with everything else was still inore than enough to pass.

The moment Keith turned and walked toward the back of the room, Joselyn’s foot shot out and connected with Ava’s leg again. Ava looked over at her paper and found it nearly empty. She exhaled quietly, flipped her own paper over, and shifted it a few inches to the right.

Joselyn leaned over and started copying at a furious pace.

Keith drifted to Ava’s side and tapped her desk lightly with two fingers. “When you’re done, go back and check your work.”

quick mental tally and decided she had enough to pass. She put her pen down and left those two blank. At her level, copying those last answers perfectly would be a red flag all on its own. The professor would know.

Joselyn gathered her things, handed in her paper, shot Ava a quick wink, and slipped out of the classroom.

The room had thinned out considerably by then. Ava started packing up her own things.

The end-of-class bell rang through the hall. Ava handed in her paper, walked out of the classroom, and found Joselyn still standing right outside the door. The second she appeared, Joselyn threw both arms around her. “You saved me. I would’ve failed for sure without you.

“I’m really glad we sat together this semester,” Joselyn went on, pulling back with a bright grin. “I’m not taking Keith’s class next semester. I need something easier on my soul. What about you?”

“Me? I honestly don’t know yet. I’ll figure it out when the time comes.”

Joselyn clapped her on the shoulder. “Then I guess we’ll see each other around next semester if it’s meant to be. This one’s almost done. I hope every single one of your finals goes smoothly.”

“You too.”

Inside the classroom, the last remaining student handed in their paper and walked out.

Ava and Joselyn waved goodbye to each other.

Keith came out of the classroom just behind her, papers already collected and tucked under his arm. He found Ava standing by the door, watching Joselyn’s retreating figure.

“Come on, Ava. Time to head back.”

He walked her home. They’d barely reached the front door when it swung open from the inside. Laurent stood in the doorway, and the moment he saw Ava, he asked, “All done with the exam?”

Ava nodded.

Keith had already taken a step to leave, but his foot stopped moving. He knew Laurent had returned recently. With Ava buried in finals these past few weeks, he hadn’t scheduled any training sessions and had given her time to focus on her coursework.

But why was Laurent here, at her place?

!

Ava stepped inside, and Keith followed right after her. He looked at Laurent and asked, “When did you get here? Are you heading back with me?”

Laurent was wearing a comfortable set of home clothes. He glanced at Keith with an unhurried case and said. “I’m staying. You should head back. Oh, and that shirt you left here last time, take it with you.”

He gestured at a button-down hanging in the entryway closet as he said it.
