Ella didn’t bother explaining. “Tomorrow. Meet me in front of the old Irvine mansion. I’ll bring the fake Doctor E. You bring my father’s ashes. We’ll do the exchange face to face.”
She turned and went inside, shutting the apartment door with a sharp click.
Everyone just stood there, stunned.
Rachel’s eyes narrowed. “We’ve already called the police and tried everything to find that scammer. It’s like he disappeared off the face of the earth. And now Ella says she can bring him tomorrow? I just don’t buy it.”
Maureen looked at David. “Mr. Harmon, what do you think?”
David stared at the closed door, lips pressed together. “Honestly, at this point, what choice do you have? You’ll just have to trust her.”
No one could argue with that.
“Fine, we’ll wait and see what Ella does tomorrow,” Grandma Jill said, slapping her hand on the table.
Jessa wrapped herself around David’s arm, her voice sweet. “David, we’re basically homeless tonight.”
David said, “I’ll have my assistant set up presidential suites at a hotel for everyone. Get some rest tonight.”
Grandma Jill’s eyes lit up. “Thank you.”
Rachel grinned and nudged Jessa. “Actually, Jessa, you don’t need to come with us. Mr. Harmon lives right here. Why don’t you stay with him tonight?”
Jessa’s face turned pink as she looked at David. “David, I…”
He pulled his arm away, his tone flat. “I’ll be working late anyway. All of you should just go to the hotel and get some sleep.”
Everyone trailed after Grandma Jill, heads hanging low.
…
Inside his apartment, David stood by the tall windows, gazing out at the city lights. Aiden came up behind him. “Sir, we’ve already got people searching for the fake Doctor E. He covered his tracks well, so it’s going to take some time.”
David shrugged off his coat. Underneath, he wore a crisp white shirt and a tailored vest. He pushed his hair back, revealing sharp, refined features. He looked tired. The past few days had been nonstop, and he’d just gotten back from Seacore City with a mountain of paperwork.
Aiden hesitated, then asked, “Sir, we’re already searching for the fake Doctor E. Why did you let Ms. Irvine’s family go looking for help elsewhere?”
David unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled up his sleeves, glancing at Aiden. “I’m after the real Doctor E. They’re impossible to track down. This situation is a good chance. I want to stay in the background and see if all this chaos will finally force the real Doctor E to show themselves.”
