Ella grinned. “Alberto, I’ve heard for ages that Maureen is your star pupil.”
She settled into her seat, her posture easy and confident. “By seniority, shouldn’t Maureen serve my tea?”
Ella sat right in the center of the hall, her eyes bright and unreadable as she watched Maureen, almost teasing, almost daring her.
Maureen felt her pride crumble. The education she’d worked so hard for, the thing she’d always flaunted, was nothing under Ella’s gaze.
“Let’s get the tea ready,” Mr. Lynch said with a nod.
A servant hurried in with a tea set. Mr. Lynch turned to Maureen. “Maureen, serve Doctor E some tea. Be good.”
Maureen froze.
Ella’s lips curled into a playful smile. “Well? What are you waiting for?”
Someone nearby chuckled. “Maureen, having someone like Doctor E as your grandmaster is the luckiest thing that could ever happen to you. Why are you just standing there?”
Grandma Jill and Rachel stood behind Maureen, totally silent, looking small and helpless.
Maureen looked like she was about to cry, but she forced herself to pick up the cup and walk to Ella. “Doctor E, please have some tea.”
Ella remembered all too well how arrogant and dismissive Maureen used to be. She didn’t even bother reaching for the cup, just smiled lazily. “Are you really serving tea like this? When you were fooled by that fake Doctor E, I tried to warn you, but you ignored me completely. After all that, shouldn’t you at least be kneeling to serve me?”
Ella made it clear. She wanted Maureen to kneel.
Maureen’s eyes filled with tears. She couldn’t hold back the humiliation.
Ella watched her coldly. After everything the Irvine family had put her through, this was just payback, just a taste of what she deserved.
She would never forget her father’s death. She would make sure they paid for everything.
Ella finally took the teacup and sipped with easy elegance. “You can get up now.”
Maureen stood and stepped quietly to the side.
Someone in the crowd spotted Grandma Jill. “Grandma Jill, you’re here too! Doctor E is your granddaughter? The Irvine family is so lucky to have a genius like her.”
Grandma Jill could only force a weak laugh.
She used to brag about Jessa and Maureen being the pride of their family, but in front of Ella, they barely mattered.
Maybe her family really was lucky, but that luck was all because of Ella.
Someone else noticed Rachel. “Isn’t that Mrs. Irvine? Doctor E is your real daughter, right? How did you manage to raise someone so incredible?”
“Mrs. Irvine, your genes must be amazing. You have to share your secrets with us!”
