Ella drifted awake, her mind foggy. When she opened her eyes, a harsh white light forced her to squint. It took her only a second to realize where she was. Years of medical training told her everything. She was lying on an operating table.
The surface was icy against her back. Around her, doctors in white coats moved quietly, their faces unreadable. One of them snapped the tops off a few small glass vials, then drew the liquid out with a long syringe. He spoke in a low, steady voice. “Get the anesthetic ready. We’re starting the abortion.”
Abortion. The word echoed in her mind. After what happened at Fiona’s place, Ella already knew they were after her. More than that, they wanted her baby.
She tried to move, but her body barely responded. The hit to the back of her neck had left her weak, every limb heavy and useless.
A nurse spoke up, sounding uncertain. “Doctor, where is her family? Isn’t someone supposed to be with her for this?”
The doctor didn’t even look up. “You don’t know? Her husband is Mr. Harmon. He isn’t coming. He called just now, told us to do the surgery immediately and get rid of the child.”
Another doctor glanced at Ella, pity flickering across his face. “You really picked the wrong people to upset. Of all the people in the world, you had to cross Mr. Harmon and Ms. Irvine. Everyone knows Ms. Irvine is the one he loves the most, and you still tried to get in her way. This was all set up by Mr. Harmon. He sent people to your best friend’s place to draw you out, then brought you straight here for this.”
Ella lay there, the cold from the table seeping into her bones. It felt like falling, like being dropped into a bottomless pit. David, how could you do this? How could you be so heartless? She had always known David would do anything for Jessa, but this… This was more than she ever imagined. Every time, he found new ways to hurt her, to push her further away.
If she could go back, she’d wish they had never met at all.
With what little strength she had left, Ella moved her hand to her stomach. Her baby was right there, so small and innocent. She couldn’t let them do this. She wouldn’t let them hurt her baby.
“No, let me go! Don’t hurt my baby!” Ella screamed, fighting with all she had. It wasn’t enough. Two doctors lifted her and forced her back onto the cold metal table.
One of them sighed, pinning her arms. “We don’t want to do this, but we have to follow Mr. Harmon’s orders. Blame him. He’s the one who wants your baby gone.”
“Stop! Let me go! Please!” Ella’s vision blurred as tears spilled down her cheeks, hot and relentless. Her eyes burned with rage and heartbreak.
David, why are you doing this to me? I hate you. I really, truly hate you.
