Jace’s face stayed blank. “And what if I say I’m not backing off?”
One of the men in black rushed at him. “You’re just looking for trouble.”
Jace quickly let go of Lilly’s hand. “Go stand in the corner. Don’t move.”
Lilly knew she’d only get in the way. All she could do was pray her dad and Grandma Chelsea would show up soon. She nodded, her voice small. “I’ll be good. Jace, be careful!”
The man charged, but Jace lifted his leg and kicked him hard, sending him flying to the floor.
The rest of the men saw how skilled Jace was. They exchanged glances, eyes darkening, then all attacked at once.
Lilly watched from the side, her heart pounding as Jace fought them off. He moved like he was born for this, weaving through the group with sharp, deadly precision. He looked cold and focused, never losing his edge. Every punch landed with force, the muscles in his arms flexing under his shirt. His sharp features and short hair made him look even more intense, the kind of guy you couldn’t help but stare at.
One after another, the men went down. First one, then another, then a third, a fourth... only one was left, and even he looked hesitant.
Lilly’s eyes flicked toward the operating room door. She couldn’t wait any longer. She dashed across the room and threw the door open.
Inside, Ella was lying on a cold metal table, her skin pale. A doctor in a white coat was holding a long syringe, getting ready to inject her.
Lilly’s heart squeezed. Without thinking, she ran forward and slammed into the doctor, knocking him off balance.
He hadn’t expected anyone to burst in and hit him so hard. He stumbled back into the wall and dropped the syringe, which clattered to the floor.
Lilly rushed to Ella’s side, tears streaming down her face. “Ella, it’s me. I’m here.”
She grabbed Ella’s hand. It was freezing cold.
Ella was barely conscious, fighting to stay awake. When she saw Lilly, she squeezed her hand tight, desperate. “Lilly, thank God. You’re here. Please, save my baby.”
Jace just twisted the doctor’s wrist.
There was a sickening crack, and the doctor cried out, dropping the syringe.
Jace stepped in front of Lilly and Ella, blocking them with his body. He looked down at the doctor and the last of the thugs, his eyes icy.
The doctor and the remaining man clutched their injuries, faces twisted in pain. “You’re making a huge mistake. Mr. Harmon won’t let this go.”
A cold voice rang out in the room. “That’s up to me to decide. Anyone who hurts my granddaughter-in-law or my great-grandchild will answer to me.”
A group of bodyguards in black suits marched in, lining up on either side with military precision.
Grandma Chelsea and Mr. Lynch had arrived.
