Lilly couldn't believe how quickly her excitement had faded. She never would have guessed it would be Lucas standing at her door.

Ava rushed over and gently draped a coat over Lilly's shoulders. “Miss, put this on. You'll get cold.”

Lilly glanced at her. “Ava, was it really him who came to see me?”

Ava nodded. “Yes, Miss, it was Mr. Matthis. I tried to tell you, but you ran downstairs before I could finish.”

Lilly’s voice was small. “No one else came? Are you sure?”

Ava shook her head. “No one else, Miss. Who were you hoping for?”

So Jace didn’t come.

Lucas watched Lilly carefully. “You thought Jace was here, didn’t you?”

She looked at him, her disappointment obvious. “Yeah, Lucas. So what are you doing here?”

He didn’t look happy. “I heard you were sick. I wanted to check on you.”

“I’m not dying, Lucas. But thanks for the concern.” Lilly reached out, ready to close the door.

Lucas pushed it open before she could. “Lilly, what’s your problem? I came straight over when I heard you were sick, but you don’t even want to see me.”

She stared him down. “No. I don’t want to see you. There’s no ‘seem’ about it.”

Lucas’s face darkened. “Seriously, Lilly? You’re so ungrateful.”

“Lucas, you’re dating Sarah now. How many times do I have to tell you? A good ex knows how to disappear. Stop coming back into my life. I’m asking you not to show up again.”

Lucas took a big step toward her, closing the gap between them. He looked down at her, taking in her delicate face, the soft pink silk of her nightgown, her long black hair falling loose around her shoulders. Her eyes were bright and full of life, and she just looked so natural, so pretty.

Lilly took a breath. “Lucas, so what? What does your breakup have to do with me? You don’t need to update me on your love life.”

Lucas’s hands curled into fists. “Lilly, are you doing this on purpose? You’re playing hard to get, aren’t you?”

She stared at him, confused. “What are you even talking about?”

“Lilly, I know you’ve always loved me. Before, I ignored you and got together with Sarah. That’s why you started seeing Jace, isn’t it? You don’t really like him. You’re just using him to get back at me, right?”
