Lilly looked up at Jace. “Jace, are you staying tonight?”

Jace had just finished calming Lilian down and slipped back in quietly. He still had to leave, but not until the early morning. There was a little bit of time left.

“Go to sleep,” Jace said. “I’ll leave after you’re asleep.”

Lilly moved over, lifting the blanket and patting the space next to her. “Then come get in. It’s warm in here.”

Jace slid in beside her.

Lilly pressed herself close, soft and warm, her head resting on his arm. She looked up at him with those big, dark eyes.

Something inside Jace just melted. He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her in.

For a while, they just held each other. Jace glanced over at Victoria, lying on Lilly’s other side, sound asleep.

“When did Victoria fall asleep?” he asked.

“Around ten,” Lilly whispered. “She studied until the last minute. Her big exams start tomorrow and will last three days. I’ll walk her to the test in the morning. You don’t have to worry.”

Her voice was gentle and reassuring.

Jace smiled a little. This felt so much like his parents back in the day—his dad out working, his mom running the house, making sure everything was fine.

But Lilly didn’t owe him any of this.

He really couldn’t get away right now, and Lilly was always here for him.

Jace looked down at her. “Lilly, I…”

She reached up and pressed her finger to his lips. “Shh. I’ve heard enough thank yous. Don’t say it again. I do these things because I want to. And besides, Victoria is amazing. Just wait, in ten years she’ll be all grown up and successful, and I’ll get to brag that I was part of it. It’s like investing in the future.”

Jace hesitated. He wanted to tell her about the marriage. “Lilly, I…”

But she cut him off. “It’s Lilian’s, isn’t it? I knew you were with her!”

She pouted, her lips turning red and stubborn. “Jace, I don’t care why you’re with her, but you’re not allowed to do anything intimate with her. And I’ve heard those rumors about you two getting married are true. You can’t marry her. Got it?”

Jace swallowed the words he’d wanted to say. “Lilly, if I did marry Lilian…I mean, if I had to…”

“Then I’d leave you.”

Jace froze, completely lost for words. He couldn’t say it. He was scared she’d really leave.

And with that important person about to show up, he didn’t even know if he’d make it out alive. He just couldn’t promise Lilly anything right now.
