Jessa turned to the event organizer, her eyes sharp. “Excuse me, is the Emerald Banquet only for those on the Forbes rich list?”
The organizer nodded. “That’s right.”
“So if someone isn’t on the list, would that mean they snuck in?”
The organizer sounded certain. “Everyone here tonight is on the Forbes list. If anyone slipped in, we’d ask them to leave immediately.”
Sarah flashed a satisfied smile. “Exactly. This event is for people who actually matter. If someone doesn’t belong, they drag us all down. They should be kicked out right away.”
Jessa’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Well, there’s someone here tonight who doesn’t belong.”
“Who is it?”
Jessa pointed straight at Ella. “Her. Ella.”
All eyes turned to Ella. She just lifted an eyebrow and gave a small, amused smile, not bothered at all.
Jessa had made enough noise that everyone at the party had started to gather, eager to see what was happening.
This was exactly what Jessa and Sarah wanted. They wanted to embarrass Ella in front of all these powerful people, force her out, and have a story to laugh about for years.
Someone in the crowd spoke up. “Ms. Wade, are you saying Ms. Irvine snuck in?”
“It’s true. I don’t see Ella Irvine’s name on the Forbes list.”
Ella straightened her back, stepping into the center of the lights. Her eyes, clear and bright, swept across the room. She spoke, her voice strong and sure.
“I don’t need to marry into money. I don’t need to chase after anyone’s power. I am the money. I am the power.”
Her words echoed through the room. For a moment, everything was silent. Every eye was on her.
David watched her, completely captivated. Tonight, Ella was dazzling, impossible to ignore. For a second, she reminded him of someone from his past, a woman whose elegance and spirit he’d never forgotten.
David’s eyes narrowed. Was it possible? Could Ella really be the same person?
Jessa started laughing, full of scorn. “Ella, did you just say you’re the money? That you’re the power? Wow. I’ve never heard anyone talk themselves up like that. Do you even know where you are right now?”
