David set his hands gently on Ella’s shoulders. “I know, Ella…”
“You don’t know anything, David. I don’t think you’re actually trying to help me.” Her voice trembled with frustration.
David’s brows drew together. “Ella, why would you say that? Is it because Lola isn’t my daughter? You really think I’d just abandon her? I care about Lola too.”
Ella realized her anxiety was getting the best of her. With Lola missing, her mind was spinning, her panic as a mother taking over.
How could she even question David? His mother had been taken too.
Now, all they could do was wait, even if every second felt unbearable.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Harmon. I’m just so worried,” Ella whispered.
David nodded. “It’s alright.”
At that moment, David looked up and spotted someone familiar. Wyatt had just arrived.
David didn’t hesitate. “Ella, this is the Capital. I’m the only one who can really help you here. I promise, I’ll get Lola and my mother back. For now, you should come with me.”
“Go with you? Where?”
“To my villa.”
Ella’s lashes fluttered. “I don’t want to go there.”
“Why not? Are you afraid of me?”
“It’s not that. Someone like you, Mr. Harmon, is surrounded by beautiful girls. Your fiancée is the richest heiress around. I’m just some mom who already has a kid. There’s no way you’d ever be interested in me.”
Ella didn’t want to go to David’s villa. They were adults, and she wanted to keep things proper.
David’s voice sounded behind her. “Do you want something to drink?”
She jerked her hand away and started to turn. “I…”
As she turned around, she crashed right into him.
She hadn’t realized how close he was. She stumbled, and suddenly she was pressed against his warm, clean chest.
“Sorry,” she mumbled, quickly stepping back. Her foot caught on something, and she lost her balance, tipping backward.
“Ah!” Ella cried out.
A strong arm shot out, wrapping around her waist and pulling her right back into his arms.
Ella looked up, meeting David’s eyes, his handsome face just inches from hers.
