Ella stared at her phone, completely baffled by Fiona’s brain and why her thoughts always seemed to go straight to the gutter.
“We’re not a thing,” she typed back, stabbing at the screen.
David was in the shower, the cold water streaming over his muscles, but it did nothing to cool him down. He could hear the constant buzz of Ella’s phone from the other room. She was chatting with someone, laughing, maybe even blushing. The idea of her lying in his bed was enough to make his mind wander.
He squeezed his eyes shut and let out a slow breath, trying to get a grip. His hand drifted lower as he called out, his voice rough. “Ella?”
She heard him immediately. “What is it?”
“What are you up to?”
“Nothing, just texting friends.”
“A guy friend?”
She shot back, “Whether it’s a guy or a girl, that’s my business. If you really want to know, I’m not telling you.”
He laughed, a low, husky sound. “There’s not much about you I haven’t already seen.”
Ella’s face went hot with anger. She bit out each word. “David. Harmon.”
David heard her say his name, and even without seeing her, he could picture the blush on her face, the spark in her eyes. That image was all it took for desire to overwhelm him.
Meanwhile, Ella was oblivious to his inner battle. Her phone buzzed again with a new message from the group chat.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, Fiona had sent voice messages instead of texts.
Ella tapped one, and Fiona’s voice suddenly echoed through the quiet room. “Ella, stop pretending. It’s been three years. You have got to be desperate by now.”
“David is hot, rich, and built. Just jump him already. It’d be a perfect night.”
Ella nearly dropped her phone. She scrambled to turn the audio off, but Fiona’s voice had already filled the room, loud and clear, as if she’d shouted it through a megaphone.
She snuck a glance at David. He was looking right back at her, those eyes totally unreadable.
Ella squeezed her eyes shut, cheeks blazing. Fiona, you’re going to be the death of me.
