Jessa could barely keep it together. “I’m not ditching you. My dad just got home and something’s going on here.”
“Ms. Wade, how are we supposed to know you’re not lying? You promised us more money, but we haven’t seen a dime and you haven’t shown up either. What’s that supposed to mean?”
She tried to keep her voice steady. “I’ll pay you more, just not right now. Please, stop arguing. It’s already dark and my dad’s probably asleep. I’ll head over as soon as I can.”
“Alright, Ms. Wade. We hope you mean it this time.”
“How’s the old woman and the kid?”
“They’re fine. We wouldn’t dare do anything without your say-so.”
Jessa’s jaw clenched in anger. If these idiots hadn’t dragged Mrs. Harmon here, none of this would be so messy. She could’ve handled Lola easily on her own.
She hung up and got to her feet, slipping quietly out of her room.
The big villa was silent, everyone already turned in for the night. Jessa crept down the staircase, careful not to make a sound, and cracked open the front door, hoping to sneak out.
But before she could even step outside, she nearly jumped out of her skin. There was a group of bodyguards in black standing right outside the door. “Miss Wade!”
She stared at them, startled. “What are you doing here?”
“Miss Wade, we’re here to guard the door. You’re not allowed to leave.”
She blinked in disbelief. “What? Why can’t I leave?”
If she didn’t get out soon, her people would start panicking. She absolutely had to go tonight.
One of the guards answered, “I’m sorry, Miss Wade. You have to stay inside. You’re not allowed to leave, not even a step.”
Jessa’s patience snapped. “Are you kidding me? Do you know who I am? I’m the Wade family’s heiress. If you defy me, I’ll have my dad fire every last one of you and make sure you regret it!”
Ella didn’t even hesitate. “That’s right. I asked Mr. Wade to do it.”
Jessa could feel her anger burning in her chest. Why was it, even now that she was the Wade family heiress, Moss always listened to Ella? Whatever Ella said, he just went along with it.
Watching them stand there together, almost like father and daughter, made Jessa want to scream.
She’d been living her best life these past three years. And the moment Ella showed up, everything changed.
“Dad, how can you side with Ella against me? I’m your real daughter!”
Moss met her eyes. “Jessa, where are you trying to go so late at night? If you tell me, I’ll go with you.”
Jessa froze, lost for words.
Ella smiled sweetly. “Ms. Wade, your father really cares about you. He’s just worried it’s not safe for you to go out alone. Why not tell him where you’re headed so he can go with you? I mean, I’m pretty curious too. Who’s waiting for you out there that you have to sneak off to see?”
