Moss stared at Ella, his brows pulled together. “Ella, you’re out of line.”
Everyone knew Joanna was a sore spot for him, something people tiptoed around. But Ella? Not only did she bring it up, she was openly teasing him. The girl had guts.
“Mr. Wade, did I say something wrong?” Ella asked, her tone light but her eyes sharp.
Moss hesitated. “Nothing happened between me and Louise.”
Ella raised an eyebrow. “If nothing happened, then why did Mrs. Wade get the wrong idea?”
He looked away. “She’s just... jealous. Sensitive.”
Ella let out a soft laugh. “That’s funny, Mr. Wade. When things go wrong, it’s always your wife’s fault for being jealous? If there weren’t other women around you, would she even have a reason to be jealous? And if you already knew she was sensitive, why keep other women so close?”
Moss fell silent.
He used to get headaches dealing with Joanna, and now with Ella here, her quick tongue left him completely defenseless as well.
“Ms. Irvine, this is between my wife and me. It’s none of your business. I suggest you keep your comments to yourself.”
“Sorry, Mr. Wade. I’ll stop. I’ll see myself out.”
Ella turned to leave, but then paused, glancing back at him with a sly smile. “Oh, and one more thing. I should probably remind you, she is your ex-wife now. So, technically, this isn’t really your family business anymore, is it?”
Moss could only glare at her, thinking, just get out.
At that moment, Louise’s voice drifted in from the hallway. “David, you can’t just walk into Moss’s study.”
David’s deep, smooth voice cut through. “Where’s Ella? I heard she came to the Wade house. Is she in his study now?”
David pressed his lips together, clearly annoyed. “Visiting? Then why are you in his study? What exactly is your relationship with him?”
Moss was already in a bad mood. Now, with David looking at him like he’d just caught him red-handed, it only got worse.
“David, what are you implying? Are you seriously suggesting something’s going on between me and Ms. Irvine? I’m old enough to be her father.”
David shot him a look. “How would I know what’s going through your mind? These days, older men chasing after younger women isn’t exactly rare.”
Moss felt the insult hit him right in the face.
“Both of you, get out,” Moss said flatly.
Louise hurried forward. “Ms. Irvine, David, you should leave now. Don’t make him any angrier.”
