Now that Joanna was back, his headache was getting worse.
Louise leaned in, her voice gentle. “Moss, are you alright? Is it your head again? Why don’t you sit down for a bit? I can give you a massage.”
Moss had always suffered from headaches. Louise had even learned how to do massages from a professional, just for him.
But Moss shook his head. “I’m meeting Joanna for lunch. I’ll be in my study until then.”
He went upstairs without looking back.
Louise watched him leave, her heart twisting with jealousy and anger. Years ago, when the Wade and Johnson families arranged their marriage, he met Joanna, who was bright and bold, impossible to ignore. He never let it show, but Louise knew he had fallen for her.
After Joanna disappeared, Moss never stopped searching for her and their daughter.
Louise had stayed by his side all these years and ended up with nothing. She just couldn’t accept it.
Now that Joanna was back, the rivalry was starting all over again.
She had beaten Joanna once before. She was sure she could do it again.
…
Ella brought Lola to the Harmon family’s mansion. Mrs. Harmon helped Lola into a warm bath and found her some clean clothes.
Ella checked Mrs. Harmon’s pulse and smiled. “Your legs are healing nicely. With a little more exercise, you’ll be walking like everyone else.”
Mrs. Harmon beamed at her. “Thank you, Ella.”
Mrs. Harmon sighed. “It was because of Louise. After Joanna married Mr. Wade, things seemed fine, but Louise—his first love—was always around. Then Joanna got pregnant. Just before she gave birth, she was poisoned.”
Ella’s eyes widened. “Poisoned?”
“That’s right. Joanna used every bit of strength she had to give birth to her daughter. To keep her safe, she asked her student, Peter, to take the baby far away from the Capital. Joanna slipped into a coma after the delivery. I was giving birth to David at the same time, so I didn’t find out she was missing until afterward. Joanna was gone for more than twenty years. I always believed she’d come back, and now she has.”
So that was how it happened. Someone had tried to kill Joanna and her unborn child. She barely survived, sent her daughter away to safety, then disappeared herself.
Ella looked at David. “Where are Joanna and Jessa meeting?”
David replied, “Uncle Moss set it up at the Golden Spoon.”
A smile tugged at Ella’s lips. “I’d like to see this Mrs. Wade for myself. Let’s go to the Golden Spoon.”
