Moss took a slow breath and said, “It’s here.”
He held out his hand, and his personal assistant passed him the sealed envelope with the DNA test results inside.
Joanna shot to her feet, eyes locked on the envelope, nerves written all over her face. “So… is Jessa really our daughter?”
She couldn’t shake the weird feeling she had about Jessa. Everybody talked about the invisible bond between mother and daughter, and Joanna had always loved her child deeply. But with Jessa, there was no closeness, no spark—just something off she couldn’t explain.
She really wondered if Jessa was really her and Moss’s biological daughter at all.
“The report just arrived,” Moss said. “I know you’ve been worried, so I didn’t even look at it. I brought it straight here.”
He understood Joanna perfectly when it came to their daughter. After all, Joanna had nearly died bringing this child into the world. There was no way either of them would ever joke or take this lightly.
“Don’t wait, then. Open it now. I need to know,” Joanna pressed, her voice trembling just a bit.
Moss nodded. “Okay.”
He started to open the envelope.
Just then, a familiar voice rang out from the hallway. “Where’s Ms. Johnson? I need to see Ms. Johnson.”
It was Jessa.
She was here.
Outside, a male assistant stopped her. “Hello, do you have an appointment?”
“An appointment? Do you even know who I am? I’m the daughter of the richest man in the country. Ms. Johnson is my mother. Do I need an appointment to see my own mom? Move. I’m going in.”
The assistant didn’t budge. “So you’re Ms. Wade. Welcome. But Ms. Johnson and Mr. Wade are in a meeting and have asked not to be disturbed. Please have a seat, and I’ll let them know you’re here.”
“Okay.”
Moss tore open the envelope and pulled out the paper.
Joanna glanced down, and her eyes went wide.
Suddenly, the office door swung open with a loud bang. Jessa had forced her way in.
No one dared to physically stop her, so the assistant just trailed in behind, apologizing. “Sorry, Ms. Wade insisted on coming in.”
Jessa burst out, “Dad! Mom!”
Joanna didn’t even look up. All she could do was stare at the DNA report in shock. According to the results, Jessa really was her and Moss’s biological daughter.
