Joanna sucked in a sharp breath, completely stunned. “Moss, are you out of your mind? If you give her blood from your heart, you’ll die. I don’t want you risking your life for me. You don’t have to do this, and I definitely don’t want to owe you.”
Moss didn’t even look her way. His eyes stayed on Ella. “Let’s get started.”
Joanna grabbed his arm, her voice rising. “Moss, I’m telling you, I don’t want you to save me. Do you hear me? Ella, don’t listen to him. I do not agree to this.”
Ella glanced between them, a little smirk tugging at her lips. “We’ve still got some time with Ms. Johnson’s treatment. I can use acupuncture to keep the poison in her system under control for now. Since you’re set on this whole life-for-a-life thing, I’m sure you have a lot to take care of. You’ve got a massive company and a fortune to sort out. Why don’t you go home, put your affairs in order, and come back when you’re ready? How about that?”
She was clearly giving Moss a chance to set up his will.
Moss paused, thinking it over. “Alright. I’ll handle everything first. When I’m done, you can take my blood.”
Ella nodded. “Sounds good.”
Moss turned to Joanna. “Get some rest. I’ll be back soon.”
“Moss, wait—”
But he was already gone, walking away without looking back. It was obvious he’d made up his mind, and nothing she said would change it.
Joanna spun toward Ella, desperation in her eyes. “Ella, thank you for this, but I don’t want anyone trading their life for mine.”
Ella’s eyes sparkled, full of mischief. “You said he was just being impulsive, that he didn’t mean it. So let’s see if he really will go through with it. If he does, you’ll have your answer.”
She patted Joanna’s hand softly. “There are all kinds of ghosts and monsters in this world, but it’s okay. This is our chance to see everyone’s true colors. Right now, Mr. Wade is probably at home, writing his will. Imagine how Louise will react when she hears he’s willing to risk his life for you. Think she’ll be able to handle it?”
Joanna’s hands were still cold, but Ella’s warmth seeped into her, comforting and steady.
At this moment, Joanna felt a rush of genuine affection for Ella.
She wrapped her arms around her and whispered, “Ella, how are you always this amazing? I swear, you must be an angel sent just for me.”
