The room went quiet, thick with tension as Jessa and Louise froze, caught by Ella’s accusation.
Moss stared at both of them. Confusion and suspicion flickered in his eyes. “I was drugged last night. What happened?”
He turned to Jessa. “Jessa, I remember you making me coffee. After I drank it, I started feeling strange. Was it you? Did you put something in my cup?”
Jessa’s face drained of color. “Dad, I…”
Ella cut in, her gaze shifting to Louise. “And you, Louise. Mr. Wade went to take a shower, trying to clear his head, and when he came out, you were waiting in his bed. You and Jessa planned this together, didn’t you?”
Before either of them could answer, Ella looked back at Moss. “It’s obvious. Jessa put something in the coffee, Louise lay in wait. They set you up. The two of them worked together, and it was almost perfect.”
Moss’s eyes narrowed, his voice turning icy. “Tell me the truth. Now.”
Jessa’s words came out shaky. “Dad, it was me. I put the drug in your coffee.”
Moss’s anger was sharp, his voice rising. “Why? Why would you do that to me?”
Ella jumped in, her tone scathing. “Jessa, you did it just so Louise could sleep with your dad, right? Why would you betray your own mother like this? Joanna is your mother. Why are you taking sides against her?”
Jessa glared at Ella, her voice cracking. “Shut up, Ella. Just stop talking!”
Ella just smiled, lips curved in satisfaction. She’d seen every petty scheme before. Joanna was too classy to fight back against a social climber like Louise, but Ella knew how to deal with women like her.
Moss turned to Louise, disbelief in his eyes. “Louise, is this true? Do you have feelings for me? You always said I was just like family to you. I’ve always seen you as a sister. I’m married now. Joanna is my wife.”
There was nowhere left to hide. Louise finally let her true feelings show. “Yes, Moss. I love you. I always have.”
Moss stared at her, shocked speechless. He had never seen it coming.
Louise’s voice shook with emotion. “I love you. You want to know why I never got married? I was waiting for you. I gave you the best years of my life. Joanna has you, but she doesn’t appreciate you. I want you, Moss. I always have.”
