Jason stared at the message, reading it again and again, hoping he’d somehow gotten it wrong. But there it was. Lilly wanted to break up.

That couldn’t be right. Just last night, she’d said yes when he proposed. They’d promised each other they’d get married as soon as they got back.

Now she was leaving him?

Why?

His mind raced as he threw his clothes into his bag and hurried downstairs. The owner of the inn spotted him and gave him a friendly smile. “Hey, you’re up. I saw your wife leave a little while ago.”

Jason barely paused. “Did you see where she went?”

“She said she was heading to the airport, going home.”

She’d gone back to the Capital. Alone.

Jason pressed his lips together, his jaw tight. This didn’t make any sense. She’d broken up with him out of nowhere, then just left.

He didn’t waste a second. He caught the next flight out.

When he landed at the Capital airport, Kent was waiting by the car. “Sir.”

Jason slid into the back seat. “Have you found Lilly yet?”

Kent nodded. “Yes, sir. She went straight home after she landed.”

So she was at the Lynch house.

Jason’s voice was clipped. “Take me there.”

“Yes, sir.”

The car pulled up outside the Lynch family villa half an hour later. Jason grabbed his phone and dialed Lilly’s number again.

This time, she picked up. Her voice was cool and distant. “Hello?”

“That’s enough, Mr. Farill.” Lilly cut him off fast. She had to. If she let him keep going, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to hold it together.

“Did you see the note I left on the nightstand?” she asked, forcing herself to sound steady.

He hadn’t mentioned it once, even after chasing her all the way here. Of course she’d have to bring it up.

“I saw it.” His voice was flat. “And?”

Lilly’s grip on the phone tightened. “Let’s stop wasting time. Everything I needed to say is in that note.”

Jason cut in, fierce. “I don’t accept it.”

The words she wanted to say stuck in her throat.

“Lilly, did you hear me? I’m not letting you go.” Jason’s voice was rough, practically a shout. “I won’t break up with you.”
