The Golden Lycans (Ella) novel Chapter 12

Full Moon-Part 1

Austin: Heads up… I think Ella has figured everything out somehow! She’s just been called to see Pa in his office for a meeting and she alluded to his REAL age before she went in. But how could she have found out? Why haven’t the enchantments worked on her?!

I read the text over and over again; a text I really hadn’t expected to receive, but perhaps I ought to have. Ella had seen a lot of wolf art around the school.

I was nervous, and wondering how Ella’s meeting with our great grandfather was going. I sit there waiting and waiting for Ella to return, doing a fair bit of pacing around in the room. I wonder how she is taking it, and whether she really has figured out what community this school truly caters for

But if she had figured it out…how? Did this mean she really wasn’t the human we thought she was?

I had a lot of thoughts and feelings about it, but my overarching concern was whether Ella was okay or not.

When Ella finally comes in through the door, I can immediately tell by her expression that she defini tely knows the truth. She looks at me apprehensively as she shuts the door behind her, hanging back a little by the wall near the bathroom door.

“I hear our secret is possibly out of the bag?” I say in a light-hearted way, offering her a little smile. I try to hone my senses to gauge how she is feeling. Her heartbeat is regular, her breathing is normal…and above all there is no crying and she hasn’t run away from me screaming.

So far, so good.

I say nothing further as she sits down on her bed, staring at the floor and gently rocking back and

forth for a minute or so.

“So,” she begins to say slowly, seemingly searching for words, “in a couple of hours time, you are going to physically change into a giant wolf.”

She sounds rather impassive, and is still staring blankly at the floor.

Maybe it was time for a little damage control.

“Ella, I know it’s probably a LOT to process at the moment and I can fully appreciate that…but please know that I am the same person I have been to you since you got here. I am very much your friend, I just…happen to have the urge to go howl at the moon once a month,” I begin with a nervous laugh, trying to look as unassuming as possible, “we are still very normal people who enjoy a good romcom on Netflix, a decent chocolate bar, pizza…a shopping trip looking for lush clothes, dressing comfy and settling down with a good book… I’m still kind of human most of the time, but I  am just a little bit different,” I explain.

She smiles and her shoulders appear to relax a little. I am relieved to see this but I remain silent. I don’t want to overload her with information.

“Does it hurt?” she asks slowly, looking curious. I wasn’t expecting that to be her first question.

“Umm…yeah…it is excruciating the first time and still very painful for several moons after…now it’s just a little uncomfortable and doesn’t hurt. But the discomfort is so worth it,” I say brightly, taking a seat next to her. Thankfully she doesn’t move away from me, or even flinch.

“How…does it all work?” she begins to ask, her eyes bright and curious, “you’re born like it, but I assume you don’t do it as an infant?”

I smile a little at her; she was so science minded. Ella’s immediate reaction was to be curious rather than fearful.

“Well, we are like any other human kid until we become blended with an ancient wolf spirit during our first shift. That usually happens some time during puberty, so some time in our teens. For some it can even be before ten years of age, but it is different for everyone. You do feel your first shift coming, though, so you can prepare. My wolf is called Mira. So when I shift she gets to take control for a while, but since we became blended she is always there in my mind. We can talk to our spirits at any time. Mira was once like me, an alpha she-wolf with a wolf spirit of her own; but that was over three hundred years ago for her. One day…I might get to be someone’s wolf spirit, m aybe. It depends how well I do in the great exam of life,” I explain.

“Annabelle?” Ella asks. I nod.

“Yep…AB is also Lycan. We differ in rank, though, she’s of omega rank, which is the lowest rank as opposed to an alpha, which is the highest. We have been best friends since school started, but our ranks are the polar opposite. I don’t care what rank she is, though, because she’s my dearest friend and I love her to bits. My dad had a bit of an issue with it at first but she won him over years ago.

Rank does matter in some ways, but if you’re focussed on the person someone is, their rank doesn’t matter,” I explain.

“So you are the highest rank like your wolf?” she quizzes, listening intently.

“Yeah. Like Austin I am also of alpha rank, which is unusual for a she-wolf, but it can happen in the
