Freya bites her lip.
“Okay, so Austin is our pack’s next alpha – so the next leader – of our pack. To be the most effective
leader he needs to be strong and he needs to be focused and that can only truly happen for any alpha when he has his mate by his side. Lord knows why biology hasn’t caught up with social norms these days, but apparently no single person can do a good job leading anything or anyone,” she explains with an eye roll, “anyway, Austin is on the lookout for his mate. Just her, no one else With that in mind, imagine what happened with Chase and Ava, then happening with Austin and his mate. Anyone else in that equation gets their heart crushed, just as suddenly as he did. I don’t want that for you. Obviously the same applies to all the sixth form Lycans in this place, but my brother’s weird alpha blood has turned him into some sort of female catnip; particularly over the past six months.”
I know my expression is probably one of defeat as I finally understand what she is telling me…as questionable as my heritage supposedly was right now, none of the male Lycans in this school could ever be interested in me. This should’ve been fine, as I hadn’t cared about boys before now. But as my heart sinks in my chest I feel like that has definitely been changing since I got here.
“Yeah, it’s crazy. Alphas tend to give off this natural energy that drives ladies wild, which is why you may have noticed that he is constantly getting pestered and why so many girls keep asking Freya about him. Us ladies are just naturally drawn to them, we can’t help it. Usually,” Annabelle said, “the witches especially. They don’t take the mate bond stuff seriously and truly think they have a shot at Aus, when he just isn’t interested in dating around.”
“Aus is a bit of an enigma though. Generally our wolves are pretty driven by their animalistic tendencies and you’ll get higher ranking Lycans working their way through as many young women in their pack as they can, ones who aren’t bonded with another wolf….like Ollie. Aus just isn’t like that, his wolf spirit is very old and just weirdly super controlled. I’m tired of explaining this to girls in our pack and others. He isn’t going to be playing the field, so to speak. They waste their time and energy. I wish they’d get the hint and just leave him alone. Hopefully he finds his mate when he turns eighteen in January, and that will put an end to it completely,” Freya says, rolling her eyes.
“You might find that on full moons you notice people getting a little handsy with each other in the corridors. We can’t help it…we’re animals,” Annabelle says with a wink.
“Yep…I think I saw that in the library only yesterday,” I admit.
We all finish up our coffees in silence for a minute while I am processing all this new information. I feel inexplicably downhearted. Who had I been kidding? Austin hadn’t been flirting with me on my run the other day. He was just a nice, friendly guy, nothing more. Of course he wouldn’t be terested in me, I had been foolish to even consider it and being attracted to him was apparently something totally out of my control anyway. The scientific side of me wonders if it’s simply strong pheromones at work and therefore an entirely biological cause. It was fascinating as much as it was frustrating.
“Come January when Aus turns eighteen, our father is planning some massive black tie bash here
at the school, that is basically like The Bachelor, Lycan edition,” Freya explains, “envoys from
notable packs across the country will come and there will be a lot of young women essentially being presented to Austin, to see if any of them are his mate. It’s an ideal event for many people to
find their mates, actually. It happened to our parents that way.”
I am genuinely surprised by the sound of that idea.
“Wow, that sounds so weird, like some sort of supernatural meat market,” I mutter.
“Yeah, it’s really not something he’s keen on, like at all, but he knows it’s got a good shot at working. Events like that are common in the bigger packs like ours. Some of the unmated higher ranks from other packs will likely show up too,” Freya added.
“So once you turn eighteen, you should be able to find your mate?” I ask to confirm. Freya and Annabelle nod, “and do they also need to be eighteen too, or-?”
“It varies. They could be younger, but they won’t feel it the same strong way until they come of age too,” says Freya, “it’s also hugely frowned upon to mate with each other before the younger one has come of age, anyway. But it does happen quite a lot, obviously.”
The bell sounds from inside indicating that it is time for class.
