The Golden Lycans (Ella) novel Chapter 18

The Library-Part 1

*Ella***

It was my free period on Friday afternoon, and I had just finished up my homework for the week which meant my weekend was well and truly free to do…absolutely nothing.

I sit there at the desk, watching the other students in the library, wondering what they were’, what their history was and whether they had any questions about their background too. Perhaps I wasn’t the only one here grappling with questions about their heritage and what it might mean for their future.

I tap my pen impatiently on the front of my notebook. It was still another fifty minutes until my next

class, and I wasn’t sure how to spend my time.

I glance over at the bookshelf I’d been browsing on Monday, when what I thought I knew about the world had been turned on its head. I tap my pen some more before deciding to go over there. It

couldn’t hurt to learn more about my peers, could it?

I get up and wander over, looking at the shelf opposite the back wall. The book I’d originally picked up was still there, sitting innocently on the shelf, as if it hadn’t delivered me the greatest surprise of my life. I carry on looking along the shelf.

‘Sociology of Lycans’ sticks out to me and I carefully remove it from the bookcase.

I go and sit on a beanbag at the far end of the aisle, liking that it was in a very secluded corner

where no one would disturb me. I open the book to the index and I start scanning it until the words I was consciously looking for, jump out at me….because if I was being honest, I knew why I was looking at this book.

‘Lycan Mating: The Mate Bond, The Processes, Species Specific Information’

I glance up quickly, noting that the aisle is still empty. It is just me, so I quickly flip to the chapter.

I am embarrassed about what I am doing and I know it. As much as I wanted to be different, I was indeed like any of the other girls my age here and everywhere else; I was apparently, rather quickly becoming a slave to my hormones. That or the weird ‘alpha vibe’ Austin gave off, as Annabelle had described it, had me firmly in its claws. I couldn’t help it, and I now needed to just admit it to myself and own up to it: I liked Austin. The idea seemed ridiculous as I hadn’t spoken to him much at all. I knew very little about him, and yet I hoped I would see him down every corridor, at every meal time…anywhere and everywhere. Was it because I found him very physically attractive? Was I really that shallow? I didn’t want to think I was like that, but perhaps I was.

Regardless, I felt angry and annoyed at myself for rejecting him yesterday, and guilty for causing the reaction I’d seen on his face when I had. I still couldn’t believe that he wanted to go on a daté with me. Despite all the young women out there with their perfect curves, stunning faces, and most importantly an actual wolf spirit; he had asked me out on a date.

It didn’t seem real or possible.

I’d spent the rest of my free period silently cursing myself for my decision and cursing Freya a little for being the instigator of that decision.

I scan through the chapter with certain phrases leaping out at me at various points.

…vigorous mating…potential chaos when involving magic in a Lycan and witch/warlock pairing…’

…turbulent time that has thankfully never been repeated since a mate bond between a dwarf and Lycan occurred during the 1600s… Deformed offspring… Unable to shift properly without longstanding joint issues…

‘Around the year 1150AD… a singular event which sadly paved the way for the species’ eventual extinction, though prosperous for many…dominated the lands with their increased strength and invulnerability to fire…’

…destructive and turbulent though very passionate.. True warriors of incomparable honour and loyalty.. Offspring were strong and always of alpha blood regardless of parental rank…’

It sounded like throughout their recorded history, Lycans could, and indeed had, mate-bonded with many species in the past with very differing results. I badly wanted to know what my deal was.

What was I?

Did I feature on this list?

I stare at the page, deep in thought.

“That is an interesting book choice, but I have a feeling that you’re probably not enrolled on the Lycan Sociology course,” says a familiar voice in front of me. I freeze for a moment, then smirk without looking up, shutting the book as I lean back into the beanbag, facing Austin boldly. He has crouched down in front of me, and is looking strangely mischievous.

“Do you not think that you’d be even a little bit curious about everything if you were in my position?” I ask, raising an eyebrow at him. He chuckles and sinks to the floor alongside the wall in front of

I was happier than I should’ve been, to see him settle down by me.
