The Golden Lycans (Ella) novel Chapter 25

The Stone Gazebo-Part 2

*Ella***

I don’t bother to continue my run. I felt that my run-in with Austin had been more than enough cardio for my heart so early on a Sunday morning. When I get back to the room, Freya is only just waking up. She gives me a curious look as I shut the door and turn to face her. She clocks my flushed cheeks and stupid smile immediately.

“Whoa, what has made you so happy? You’re almost glowing,” she says with delight, sitting up and watching me closely as I come fully into the room. I can’t help but smile, and I try to bite down on my lip to contain my smile a bit more…but it doesn’t help. I am grinning like the cheshire cat.

Oh my goodness.

“Okay, SERIOUSLY, tell me right now!” she demands, her eyes excited. I sit down on my bed opposite her, wondering how she is going to take the news. Part of me truly doesn’t care, though.

“Uh…so…I may have just agreed to let your brother take me on a date next Saturday,” I admit, avoiding her gaze for a moment.

“Oh my god, I knew it!” Freya exclaims as she gets out of bed, “I knew you had a thing for my brother!”

She is being quite loud but she doesn’t seem that annoyed…

“I’m sorry Freya, I really tried not to-” I begin honestly, because actually…I have tried not to. It still doesn’t make any sense to me, but I guess hormones have a lot to answer for. But, Freya doesn’t let me finish, getting up and pulling me into a tight hug.

I feel quite surprised but also rather confused.

“Look, honestly, if my brother had to go on a date with any girl at this school, I’m glad it’s you,” she

says as she continues to hug me tightly. I eventually pull away from her, my expression confused.

“What changed your mind? I mean this has completely stemmed from your lie to Verity yesterday. He would not have informed me he was taking me out next weekend, otherwise,” I ask, eyeing her suspiciously. She looks downcast for a moment and her eyes well with tears.

“Life is short and it’s too precious to be too careful sometimes, even with your heart,” she says seriously. She sits down on her bed and suddenly she is telling me all about a neighbouring pack that had been entirely wiped out a month ago. I feel bad that I had no idea that my friends had been dealing with such loss for the past month.

“Why didn’t you tell me about that?” I ask her sadly.

“I don’t know. I guess I didn’t want to bum you out with stuff from our world. Our dad has been working Austin seriously hard since he told us about the attack. The poor guy has barely had any me to enjoy himself in the last four weeks. If he’s not in class he’s down the gym, so I actually think a day out would be really good for him. Yeah, the mate bond issue is still there, but…what the hell? If it makes you guys happy in the interim, why not? You’re almost adults, you can make decisions for yourselves,” she says wearily, now extracting some clothes from her wardrobe to wear.

“Freya, I know I’ll never be a part of your world, but it’s now very much a part of mine. So, please tell me things like that, I could’ve been a bit more sensitive about things, or at least be someone you could talk to about it,” I say sadly. She looks at me tenderly for a moment.

“Oh Ella, please don’t think I was purposefully not including you, because you’re not Lycan. I just…didn’t want to bog you down with something like that. There was no great need.”

I go to the bathroom for a quick shower and then I get dressed into some skinny jeans and a white henley before we head down for breakfast.

Was this why Austin had mostly ignored me for the past four weeks? That was why he’d suddenly ramped up his workouts? It all made sense now, and I felt sad for them both as we walk down the stairs towards the main hall.
